"Shellback” (writing in tho Auckland Star) says: “It is not generally known that a fair-sized sailing vessel was built at tho Iluia, on the Manukau Harbour. It was (luring the palmy days of the gold diggings at Hokitika that Gibbons Bros, built a brigantine called tho Emma Jane, a vessel of about ICO tons. She sailed to Hokitika with a cargo of produce, but on the return trip with ballast was lost with all hands.” There is a young man in Christchurch who would have felt there was something wrong if a certain morning recently had dawned with a cloudless sky. He was born on a wet day 23 years ago, and, so far, he has not known what is to have a birthday anniversary ou other than a rainy clay (remarks tho Christchurch Sun). From "1905 to 1927, wherever he has been, every July 26 has been wet. It is only fair to Canterbury, however, to add that some of the young man’s birthdays were celebrated in other South Island provinces.
