Following on a recommendation by the Harbours’ Association, the Wellington Harbour Board discussed the question of levying wharfage dues on goods imported by post. The Prime Minister had refused to allow such dues to be charged. Opinions were expressed that, while mails should be allowed in free, everything else should pay wharfage. The Chairman said a deputation would shortly interview Mr Coates, and urge the unfairness of exempting parcels by post.
