FORWARD.

NOTES. By winning the M'Keon Cup for the second year in succession the Hornby team have made a record equal to that of Marist, who won the senior competition in 1924 and 1925. The general opinion in Auckland (says the Star) appears to be that the kick out from the goal line after a force and the new play-the-ball rule are to the advantage of the code. The Marist Club in Auckland has secured the services of Knott, an ex-Soccer player. He is quite a new addition to the team (says the Sun), but within a few weeks he has proved himself to be one of their fastest backs. At a meeting of the West Coast Centre a letter was received from the Buller i Centre asking what negotiations the

centre had entered into with the Otago Centre in connection with the southern tour, as there was under consideration a proposal to send a team from Buller also. It was decided that the secretary should reply, giving full details.

A strong protest against the proposal of the New Zealand Rugby League to send a team to Australia this season was made by the Auckland League last week. The opinion was expressed that they should concentrate their clforts on the game in the Dominion, and the southern tour would be impossible if a New Zealand team were sent to Australia. Eventually it was decided to extend an invitation to a Sydney club to visit Auckland this season. Cabled advice has been received in Auckland of the death at Huddersfield, England, of Mr William Trevarthen, who was one of the pioneers of the League code in New Zealand. He was a member of the Newton Rugby Union senior team, and also an Auckland Rugby representative. Lie joined the New Zealand League team that was organised in 1907 to tour England, and proved one of the best forwards in that combination. The 1907 tourists achieved the extraordinary feat of winning the rubber from England as the outcome of three tost matches.

At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland League the Chairman (Mr W . J. Hammill) stated that it was proposed to send the Auckland representative team south at the close of the local cup season. It was suggested that the team should play matches at Westport, Greymouth, two matches at both Christchurch and Dunedin, and a match against Wellington on the way home. it was estimated that the tour wotdd cost at least £650. It was proposed that the team should consist of 18 players, a manager, and a member of the Referees’ Association.

INVITATION TO SYDNEY CLUB. AUCKLAND, July 29. An application by the Auckland Rugby League for permission to invite the South Sydney Club to play a series of matches in Auckland, formed the subject of a lengthy discussion at the New Zealand Council meeting last night. It was resolved to grant the application on condition that the southern leagues were acquainted with all the particulars that would provide them with the opportunity of inviting South Sydney to their centres.
