BOWLING

DUNEDIN BOWLING CENTRE. MEETING OF DELEGATES. A meeting of delegates of the various clubs affiliated to the Dunedin Bowling Centre was held on Saturday night, Mr W. T. Henaghan (president of the centre) occupying the ..hair. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr Henaghan said the past season had been a successful one, and he was glad to say that any differences which had existed between the Dunedin and outlying centres had now been cleared away. It was also satisfactory to note that the credit balance of the centre showed an increase of £l2 over that of last year.

Mr D. C. Cameron seconded the motion, and the report was unanimously adopted. Mr D. Al. Pastier was elected president for the ensuing year, and then took the chair. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —President, Mr D. AL Pastier; vice-president, Mr A. J. Sullivan; treasurer, Air R. H. Todd; committee —Messrs R. H. Ledlie (Anderson’s Bay). W. Millin (Balmacewen). W. T. Henaghan (Caledonian), R. 11. Todd (Caversham). W. Allan (Fairfield), J. L. Miller (Green Island), J. M’Gregor (Kaikorai), James Allan (Kaituna). 11. Rowley (Leith), G. L. Scott (Mornington'), J. Tonkin (NorthEast Valley), J. Al’Kinnon (Otago), J. C. Bannerman 'Outrani), W. G. Love (Port Chalmers), J. Harraway (Roslyn), G. L. Swift (Seacliff), D. C. Cameron (St. Kilda), J. Haigh (Taieri), B. W. Fell (Waikouaiti), W. Connor (West Harbour) ; auditors, Messrs C. Russell Smith and J. G. Dempster. It was agreed that the levy on the clubs be the same as for last year (Is Cd). On the motion of Mr J. Abbott, seconded by Mr Connor, it was decided that a telegram be sent to Mr 1. K. Sidev, conveying the centre’s good wishes in regard to the Daylight Saving Bill. The question of inter-club matches, and whether the draw could be arranged to prevent two clubs meeting more than once during the season, was discussed, and it was decided that the matter be left to the incoming executive to arrange. It was decided that a four-rink chainpionship be carried out on the same lines as last year. A similar decision was come to in regard to the champion of champions and shield rink competitions. Air Falconer (Otago) moved —“ That in inter-club games, where an average of 14 heads has been completed, the game or games count as a completed game or games, should rain stop play.” He said that in some instances games were not finished, and had to be completed on the following Saturday, which meant interfering with that day's programme. —Air Cameron said the motion should apply to the full strength of a club, otherwise a section or two sections might be played and completed, while another two sections might be unfinished. —Air R. H. Todd seconded the motion, which was lost. The following remit, from the Dunedin Club was moved by Air A. J. Sullivan: — “ That this club recommends the Dunedin Centre to hold its annual bowling tournament at Christmas time.”—Air A. Steele seconded the motion. He said if it were possible it would be preferable to hold the tournament at Christmas time. — Air W. Jacobsen said that tournaments at Christinas time had never been a success. —The motion was lost. It was decided that the annual tournament be held, as usual, at Easter. Mr W. Aliilin moved the adoption of the following remit from the Balmacewen Club: —“That in the case of a draw' in any final in the centre tournaments, a full game shall be played.”—Air Omand seconded the motion.—The President said

that when they were working to a time schedule during the short days around Easter-time the suggestion conveyed in the motion might easily prove a bugbear. — Air W. Connor agreed with the previous speaker, although, he said, he was in favour of the motion.—Mr Cameron suggested that the matter might be referred to the executive for consideration,—Mr W. Allan (Taieri) said he thought the idea worth trying.—The motion was carried. A further Balmacewen remit was moved by Mr Millin: “That in the finding of section winners in the centre tournament, in the event of two or more being equal that a number of heads be played and not a time limit as at present.”—Mr Millin pointed out that playing to a time limit did not always prove satisfactory, and instances had occurred where head after

head had been burnt in an effort "to play out time. —Mr Onia nd seconded the motion. —Mr Cameron moved as an amendment: ’’That the questions be recommended to the executive for favourable consideration.” —Air A. J. Sullivan seconded the amendment, which was carried. Mr J. Allan (Kaituna) moved—“ That it be a recommendation to the Dominion Bowling Association that the time occupied in the annual association tournament bo shortened as far as possible. With that end in view, the centre further suggests that preliminary or qualifying stages of a tournament, when all the competitors are taking part, should bo made as interesting as possible with regard to the time available, and the secondary stages completed in the shortest possible time.”—Mr Allan said that the last occasion on which the tournament was held in Wellington extended over three weeks, and he considered this too long; besides, three weeks’ absence at a tournament was too big a break for the average business man. —Air Jacobsen, who seconded the motion, said that if each event were finished as it came along the time would be shortened considerably. A player who won his games in the preliminary stages of the tournament was often forced to sit on the bank for days before the final stages of his event, were entered upon.—Air Allan said that he was satisfied a good tournament could be carried out in a fortnight.—The President said the time seemed opportune for making representations to have the Dominion tournament shortened. Unfortunately, it was rare to have fine weather right through a tournament, and this, to a certain extent, precluded its

completion in less than three weeks. Still, the tournament could be shortened by the application of the sudden death principle in the post-sectional play of the rinks, and he thought the time would come when this would have to be done; otherwise, the tournament, by'virtue of being top heavy, would fall to the ground.—The motion was carried. Mr Falconer (Otago) moved—“ That the centre approve of the suggestion from the South Canterbury Centre for an eightrink championship between the Christchurch, South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland Centres, or, as an alternative, regular matches between Otago and South Canterbury Centres.” —Air Steele seconded the motion.—Air Cameron said they were having altogether too many trips, and in his opinion this was not in the best interests of the sport. It seemed to him that with these numerous trips they were following too closely on the lines of Rugby. Whether Canterbury played Southland was a matter between these two provinces —it did not concern Otago at all. As for South Canterbury, the Otago bowlers played at Timaru on their way back from Christchurch. Besides, these matches would interfere with the object they had in view of playing more local matches. —• Air Harraway supported Air Cameron.—• The President said Southland had enough difficulty in getting a team to Dunedin, and he could not see how they could send a team to Canterbury.—Air Falconer pointed out that an Otago team would be going to Christchurch and Invercargill in any case, and if 'the system were adopted the number of trips would be reduced; it would certainly not entail any more expense/.—The first section of the motion was lost, and it was decided to refer the alternative suggestion to the executive. Notice was received from the secretary of the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association intimating that Alessrs AL I' 1 . Barnett and E. H. Healey (Christchurch), J. Aloyes (Timaru), J. J. Marlow, D. Al. Fastier (Dunedin), and J. H. Louden (Invercargill) had been appointed as the South Island members of the Dominion Bowling Council.
