The coastline in South Taranaki for the most part has formidable cliffs along the sea front, and it would be difficult to estimate the number of acres of good land between Pate* and Opunake that have disappeared during the last few years (states the Poverty Bay Herald). The cliffs are of papa formation, literally full of shells, many of which are in good state of preservation. After the fall of the cliffs the papa hardens and it is quite interesting to pick up boulders and study the various shell impressions.
