YOUTHFUL IMMIGRANTS.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHEME. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 16. Three years ago the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce inaugurated an EnghsEpubl’o schools boys immigration scheme. The results of the scheme were reviewed at tonight’s annual meeting. It was reported that of the boys, who had come out, only 3 per cent had failed, whilst 10 per cent., failing on the land, had made good in town positions. These English boys, who had spent the last year of their shooling it the New Plymouth High School and had followed an agricultural course specially arranged for them, had all been successful when drafted on to the land. Local farmers had loyally co-operated with tho chamber in the work. It was mentioned that some of the boys had already gone into partnership with local farmers, whilst others had taken up share-milking, and the parents of some of the boys had come out with a view to starting their sons on tho land. The success of the scheme was due largely to the fact that a personal interest, was taken in the boys’ welfare, and close touch with farmers and trainees was maintained, bv the chamber, which now has nearly 200 under its care. • • r
