CROWDS BESIEGE CAR.

DUKE KEENLY INTERESTED. DANNEVIRKE. March 4. The Duke this morning gave another instance of his keen interest in all that pertains to the ordinary, activities of the people among whom he moves. Last evening as the train came past Bunnythorpo he noticed the Glaxo works, and on inquiring what they were expressed a desire to see the process of the manufacture of dried milk, Glaxo, etcetera. Accordingly he was out early this morning, and, acconiapnied by the Mayor, visited the works while they were in full operation. The Duke saw the whole chain of operations, from the receipt and weighing of the milk to the packing of the finished product ready for export. He remarked at the close of the visit that this experience was -• one of the most interesting and instructive he had had In the beautifully fine weather of a typical Manawatu autumn morning the Duke motored back to town to a belated breakfast before beginning another day’s strenuous touring. The impetuosity of Palmerston’s welcoming crowds made the progress from the square to the station rather slower than the schedule, eager crowds running all the way in front afld around the open motor in which their Koval Highnesses rode acknowledging the good wishes of the besiegers. The train started nearly half an hour late, and the line through square and town and on the outskirts was bordered by throngs of cheering, gesticulating people. Motor cars filled every roadway, and irrepressible small boys occupied every eminence it is possible for a boy to climb. Even the railway signal posts bore strange, devices on their usually strictly utilitarian' semaphore arms. The rugged grandeur of Manawatu Gorge was viewed in bright sunlight, throwing crag and stream and frowning bluff into strong relief. The picture was one not soon to be forgotten by those who saw it for the first time.
