During the hearing of the Hood v. Ratana and Moko case in the Wanganu* Supreme Court expert evidence was given regarding the temple. A building contractor stated that be had erected somo six churches, and he had never seen anything like the Ratana Temple. When he first saw it, it reminded him of. a musio hall or hippodrome, and it was a very common design. “The temple as it stands now would survive neither a storm nor an earthquake,” said the witness. Information was later gleaned that the temple had’ been erected by a Maori who knew nothing at all of architecture.
