WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) March 4. Two Trentham-trained horses in Matu (who was placed each day. at Wanganui) and Vexatious won the .Hurdles each day at Woodville. Lady Desmond (Limond—Bronze) 'was taken across to Nelson for the Cup,, and was successful on her only appearance. She is owned’ by Mr Tom Newman, of Newman ■ Bros., and the win was , very popular. It was 30 years since Hawera trainer Oney Cox was on- the . Richmond" course. He rode Swift to--second place

in the Cup, and won the big race on the Jecond day. , F. Davis repeated his performance ot u year ago with Oreum by again winning the Woodville Cup with Magna Charta (King John —Landrail). On the second Idav he again beat all his opponents except the Wanganui winner Star Area (Acre— Star Queen) who was not amon D the runners in the Cup. Magna Charta. who has won at Ellerslie, will be seen °”U*«» Racing Club’s meeting on the 17th and 19th arc very satisfactory, although theie does not appear to be so many South horses as in previous years, when the meeting came after Easter. It « hoped the Challenge Stakes, Gold Cup, and St. Reger will provide interesting contests although Rapine and Commendation stand out in the last two events. Hynanna, winner of the Consolation Cup at Trentham, put up his best perioiaiance in the Dannevirke Cup, in winch he carried 9.8 and won in 2min 6 4-osee. Lady Desmond carried two stone less at Nelson, when she put up the same time. Mr C. F. Vallante won the Maiden at Woodville with KaTos (Boniform--Black Lake) and took a division at Dannevirke with Grand National (Martian —Amber and White). He beat two-ysar-olds in Royal Lineage and King Quex. The Trentham-trained No Favours, a winner at "Woodville, was beaten in the Highweight Handicap by Many Colours, who was placed in his three starts oicr hurdles at Gisborne. The second division of the Maiden went to the Foxton-trained Henna, by Kilbroncy —Lady Louisa. „ Rising Star (Bisogne—Day Star marc) beat another Wanganui winner in Capitulation in the Tahoraite Hack Handicap. The Taranaki-trained Merry Jest was favourite for the President’s Handicap, but could only get third to Lady Ideal and Mireusonta. Hynanna scored a meritorious win in the Cup, in which he conceded Vertigern, one of his own age, 361 b and a neck beating. The Taranaki-trained Jazz Baby (Tea Tray—Dixie Land) was the only rehandicapped winnner at Woodville to win a fr ain. "'I-he Gisborne-owned and Hastingstrained Royal Diadem (Pol.vdamon —- Royal Mary) scored in the Rakaiatai Handicap, not out of his turn. Hymill, who ran prominently at Trentham. failed in the Makirikiri Hack Handicap. which went to the Wanganui trained Break o’ Day (Finland —Serene).

AUCKLAND TOPICS. ■ By Digger. Mr.R. T. Reid, owner of Town- Bank, has purchased the promising two-year-old Lorna Doon, and also a yearling halfbrother to that filly by Valkyrean from Lassie Doon. The pair are likely to remain in H. Eva’s charge at Te Aroha. Mr L. G. Hill, who was recently appointed secretary to the Dunedin Jockey Club,.r.has been for several years in Whangarei, where he filled the secretary s office .with complete success. He will taKe with him the good wishes of Auckland racing men, when he enters into his new position. Mr W. Richmond, a visitor from New South Wales, recently acquired a two-year-old pony gelding by Hymestra from the Martian mare Marceline. If he shows any promise when tried he will be taken across to Sydney. Le Choueas looked bright enough at Te Aroha,. but he required a race or two to tune him up. The Magpie gelding is nearing his best condition, and lie •siiuuid be worthy of consideration if started at the Franklin or Ohinemuri fixtures. Racing is gradually working improvement in the Comedy King gelding, Bold Front. He was unlucky in running on the second day at Te Aroha, where he finished well just outside the placed horses. Mr Earl’s horse will need only to run a similar race to be hard to beat at Pukekohe on Saturday. Archibald’s running was challenged on the first day at Te Aroha, Kawa being also the subject of an inquiry. Both these horses looked well, and can be expected to carry some support next time out. The explanation offered concerning Archibald was deemed satisfactory, but dissatisfaction was expressed regarding the .handling of Kawa over the first halfmile. Horses who were in the limelight last winter are now making a reappearance on the scene. Sir Roseberry is working steadily at Ellerslie, and Kawini is down for an engagement at Pukekohe on Saturday. As the latter is trained in private little is. known regarding his condition. Respirator, a big three-year-old, by Tea Tray from Freezia made a good showing at Te a roha after getting away badly. He will be hard to beat next time out in a maiden field. He seems to possess the ability to go fast possessed by most of Tea Tray’s offspring. Serang’s running has been hard to follow. He ran badly on the first day at Te Aroha, and then created a mild surprise by winning nicely on tile second day. Latterly he has been uncertain, but there is no question of his ability to go fast. Perhaps it is _ the racing he has been in need of. He is likely to find more favour now that he has returned to the winning list. Merry Damon revealed a glimpse of his true form a.t Te Aroha, but he was again unlucky. A bad start cost him certain victory on the first day, and then with little luck in running he finished a close fourth in the big race on the second day. If he comes right back as he now threatens to do, he will win more than one race. The more racing Town Bank gets the worse he. performs. He looks well enough, and it is hard to understand his loss of form. At present he is a good one to leave along. Wyoming ran creditably on the first day at Takapuna, but made no showing on the second day. He is a useful galloper who may do better at Pukekohe on Saturday. That promising horse Town Guard is training on all right at Ellerslie. So far his efforts have been nothing to enthuse over, but it is almost a certainty that be will, before long, show something better tn publq

',, After a successful trip to Gisborne 1 rincess Ronnie is carrying- her usual bright appearance. The little Polydamon mare is not a good weight carrier, but she is not overburdened in the Franklin Cup, in whicli race she will strip one of the fittest candidates. Tea Time continues to race unluckily, and he was second and fourth at Te Aroha. On the first day he showed a great burst of speed in front of the field, but did not do so well when ridden in behind on the second day. He was expected to lose his maiden status at Matamata, but in any case a win for him is not likely to be long delayed. Eden Hall is a good and constant performer. He is one of those unfortunate horses who always race well enough to keep up in the weights. Newbury has not been over-raced of late. He is a brilliant beginner, and will be very hard •’ . 1 at if he attempts the Ramarama Handicap at Pukekohe. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. TE AROHA RACES. Second Day—Monday, February 28. INVERCARGILL TROTTING MEETING. First Day—Friday, March 4. The Invercargill Trotting Club’s annual meeting was opened in fine weather, and' in the presence of a fair attendance. The track -was in good order, but a breeze steadied the horses as they were: racing down the back, and consequently the times recorded were perhaps a second or two more than they would otherwise have been. Big fields went to the post-for all the events, and the rac-

ing throughout was interesting, but seldom exciting. In most cases backers shot wide, of the mark, and the succession of big dividends was no doubt largely responsible for the shrinkage in the totalisator returns. The Ashburton filly Denver’s Doll was made a strong favourite in the Maiden, and just won after showing a fine burst of speed over the two last furlongs. She did not get .away well, and would have been unlucky to lose. Roan Wilkes opened up a big lead in the loose trotters’ race, and won nicely at the finish, though her task would have been harder if Watersong had not broken twice. He looks like an early winner. Lady Zita made a one-horse race of the Crescent Handicap, her win being _ the easiest of the day. With half the journey gone Western Don came down, and interfered with some of those behind him, but nothing had a chance of catching the winner.

The 17 acceptors went to the post for the Cup, and the Ashburton candidate,. Pluto, carried the heaviest investments. He hung a little at the start, and finished third after pacing a solid race. Desert Star showed speed in patches, but got a bad run, and had to be- -checked several times. Hylas hit the front half a mile from home, and went on to win well from Moor Chimes. The Dunedin-owned Mountain Chimes lost ground at the start, but ran up into fourth place when going down the back. The effort, however, was too much for him. and he could not go on with it. Mirella was one of the front lot for three parts of the journey. Storm Bell got well away in the Thomson Handicap, and was soon out in front. She paced a fine even race, and looks capable of taking a tighter mark. Most of the field in the Travis Memorial went to breaks, and the winner was one of the few- to- keep a level gait. He won easing up, and impresses as one that might be found in better company before long. The win of Northope in the Members’ Handicap was largely due to the superior judgment of J. M'Lennan. , The second horse, Jackie Audubon, is a promising

four-year-old that - raees in the same interests as Whispering Willie. Cliffchild was travelling well when he trod on the wheel of a sulky, and nearly came down. I'awson Bingen won the mile saddle race with something in hand, but might have had to go a bit faster had something not gone wrong with Royal Sun’s gear. Marvindale made up a lot of ground to get third. The totalisator returns for the day were £11,159, compared with £12,008 for the corresponding’ day last year. Results: — ... MAI DEX HANDICAP Of lOOsovs. One mile and a-half. I—Mr T. W. Gudsell.’s blk f Denver’s Doll, by Denver Huon —Princess Dolly, 3yrs, scr (W. J. Gudsell) 1 15 —Mr A. C. Mill’s Panee Lao, scr

Pert Pointer dwelt on the mark and lost all chance. Sea Hawk began very smartly. As the held passed the stands for the first time he had overtaken the majority of the field and was lying third to Needles and Panee Lao, with Denver’s Doll just leading a bunched field next. The leaders opened up a big gap going into the back stretch, where Sea Hawk tangled badly and dropped back. Panee Lao raced past Needles before the far turn was negotiated, this pair being 12 lengths in front of Denver’s Doll. The latter, however, put in a sustained run, and, gradually overhauling the. leaders, chased Panee Lao un the straight. A punishing finish saw the favourite just head Panee Lao on the post, Needles being two lengths away third, with Winnie Chrysler 10 lengths off fourth. Sea Hawk was" fifth. The favourite, Roan Wilkes, commenced well, and, taking the lead immediately, won Lom end to end. She skipped once or twice, but this did not affect her chances. The order going out of the straight was Roan Wilkes, Watersong. Bob Wilkes, and Perfectation. Roger Wilkes, who broke shortly after the start, made a. forward move rounding the turn into the back stretch, but when going well broke again and gave way to Marvin Bell, who went after the leaders. Roan Wilkes and Watersong, going well in front, held the lead, the favourite winning comfortably by five lengths. The third horse was four lengths away. Then came Roger Wilkes, Marvin Bell, and Wattle Patch. Watersong and Bob Wilkes galloped past the post. Times: 3min 51 l-ssec, 3min 52sec, 3min 55sec, 3min 52 l-ssec. CRESCENT HANDICAP

Lady Zita began smartly, and put a break of 12 lengths on tne field before a furlong was -covered. Jack Mao fell and brought down Moonglow just after the start, also interfering with the back markers. Lady Zita, pacing strongly,

ran out of the straight a good 20 lengths ahead of Coy Bells, with Sunshade and Baker Boy next. Western Don passed Sunshade while negotiating tho bend, but interfered with Sunshade and both came down. In the back stretch Baker Boy overtook Coy Bells, but had no chance with Lady Zita, who went on to win by eight lengths. Coy Bells was a similar distance away third. Wee Spark was fourth, the rest of the field trailing off. Times: 3min _ 47scc, 3inin 47 2-sscc, 3min 54 2-ssec. 3min 53 2-ssec. Mirella was the first to show out from Bonanza and Robert Bell, Lingfield dropping back to last position. Along the back and rounding the turn into the straight the positions were unaltered. Pluto put in a good run as the field went out of the straight and temporarily headed Bonanza, Mirella and Roving Don. Here Hylas became prominent and closely followed by Moor Chimes, bettered his position. Mountain Chimes had also battled through the field to gain fourth position. The order going down the back was Bonanza, Hylas, Pluto, Mountain Chimes and Revolt. At the far turn Moor Chimes had taken second place to Hylas, with Pluto. Revolt and Mountain Chimes handy. Once into the straight Hylas stalled off a challenge by Moor Chimes, and won comfortably by a length and a-half, Pluto being a length behind Moor Chimes. _ Revolt was fourth, and then came Mountain Chimes, Locanda Queen and Mate o’ Mine. Going out of the straight Vasiliki closed on the leaders, and a good race ensued along the back, where Vasiliki took second position to Storm Bell. A good run home saw Miss Adonis supplant Vasiliki in second position and challenge the leader. Second Day.—Saturday, March 5. The meeting was concluded in fine weather, and in the presence of a big attendance. Big fields again faced tho starter, and the racing was interesting, though the winning margins in most cases were fairly wide. The track was bumpy in one or two places, but this fact, coupled with the further one that a stiff breeze was at times in evidence, did not prevent some of the runners from getting inside their handicap times. In the Trial Handicap. Pert Pointer went away kindly for J. Walsh, and after hitting the front about a mile from home, was never headed. Winnie Chrysler might have given more trouble bad her pilot not delayed his finishing run so long. Tire race served to introduce a promising sort in John Dee. Tohe Roa, with J. M'Lennan in the saddle, drew out to a big lead in the Murihiku Jlandicaix but put in two very bad breaks, and after the race it was seen that he had struck himself. He has plenty of pace. Alpha Wilkes began well, and went an even race. Pluto was backed down to a short price in the big race, and never .gave his supporters any cause for anxiety. He was handled with better judgment than he was in the Cup, and looks capable of better things. Desert Star again showed fine bursts of speed, and a win for him soon would be no surprise. Mountain Chimes was always well up, and Lingfield will be all the better for the race. Lady Freeman won the Coldstream Handicap casing up, but the feature of the race was the way in which Nelson M’Elwyn made up his ground after dwelt ing on the mark. Storm Bell quickly settled to work in the Jellicoe Handicap, and . was never seriously threatened, winning easily. Cliffchild could not go the pace set by .the leaders, and finished well back. Spring Chimes was solidly supported for the Visitors’ Handicap, and had the race won a long way from home. His backers were, however, kept in suspense until the conclusion of an inquiry into the running as compared with that of the first day.

Arctotis, the winner of the Waikiwi Handicap, is a promising four-year-old from that fine mare Bellflower, and tias an attractive gait. Wattle Patch, the runner up, will be heard of again, as will Mickey Audubon. Wawson Bingen won tire Au Revoir. Handicap just as easily as he won on the first day, and is apparently capble of doing the times with which his admirers credit him. During the day £13,693 was handled by the totalisator, making a total for the meeting of £24,852, as against £25,313 10s for the two days in 1926 —a decrease of £461 10s. The gate takings were approximately £lOO ahead of those for last year. Results:— TRIAL HANDICAP Of lOOsovs. One mile and a-half. 3 — Mr J. This order was maintained going round the turn to the back stretch, where Pert Pointer went to the front. Sunshade was going well and ran up to fourth place, the leaders along the back, being Pert Pointer, Brentwood, and Mountain Queen. At the far turn Winnie Chrysler became prominent, and headed Brentwood and Sunshade. Pert Pointei’ led into the straight from Winnie Chrysler, Sunshade, Brentwood, and Turi Chinies, and went on to win in a good finish from Winnie Chrysler by a length, Turi Chimes beating a tiring field and finishing third, 20 lengths away. A good start to what turned out to be a good race. Mirella was slow to move, and lost several lengths, and Sandown stopped for reveral seconds. Robert Bell led out from Bonanza, Revolt, Pluto, and Free Lance, this order being maintained through the back stretch; but Mountain Chimes on the rails could be noticed pacing soundly. and . radually improving his position. Entering the straight for the first time a good run on the outside of the leaders saw Pluto go to the front with Rober Bell and Mounain Chimes his closest attendants, Free Lance and Moor Chimes next. The field was well bunched, Sandown alone being out of the picture. The order negotiating the turn into the back for the second time was Pluto, Mountain Chimes, Free Lance, Robert Bell, Moor Chimes, and Lingfield. The last-named moved into third place at the far turn, where Mountain Chimes threw out a bold challenge to Pluto. Desert Star here also made a run. Pluto led Mountain Chimes into the straight by two lengths, Lingfield occupying third position a length behii . Mountain Chimes, Moor Chimes and Free Lance retaining their positions. A good race home resulted in Pluto winning comfortably by four lengths from Mountain Chimes, Desert Star, who sustained his run, being four lengths away, followed by Lingfield, Moor Chimes, Free Lance, and Lucky Harold.
