WINE DRINKING.

AUCKLAND, March 5. The report of the Temperance and Public Morals Committee, presented by the Rev. J. A, Lochore to the New Zealand Methodist Synod, regretted that it was impossible to record an abatement of what it termed the “wine drinking” evil in the Dominion. ■ “This evil grows,” the report stated. “It is increasingly evident at weddings. We must as a church condemn this dangerous practice.” Concerning betting and gambling, refererence was made to a deputation which waited on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Internal Affairs to voice the opposition of the Protestant Churches to the permitting of art unions, and to the sympathy expressed by the Hon. Mr Bollard with the objects of the deputation. The same deputation dealt with motion picture and poster censorship, in regard to which the Prime Minister gave satisfactory assurances.

Conference decided that a letter of appreciation be sent to the Prime Minister.
