MOTOR CARS COLLIDE.

ONE WOMAN KILLED. It AUCKLAND, February 17 The Kaitaia motor sports at Ninety Mile Beach were abruptly terminated this afternoon as the result of a collision between two cars, one of which was competing in the five mile open handicap. The accident caused the death of a lady passenger, Mrs Elizabeth Spender, of Rawene, and severe injuries to four other occupants Details of the injuries received are: — Mrs Elizabeth Spender, wife of Mr Paul Spender, garage proprietor, of Rawene, killed outright. ' .. Mr Herbert Ilassington Fitzherbert, mechanic, employed by Mr Spender, minor injuries and shock. Mr Victor Ferdinand Eisenhut, garage proprietor, of Kaikohe, severe injuries about head. . Mr Reginald Molloy, barman, Kaikohe Hotel, severe injuries to head and knees and general shock. Mr George Washington Moore, engineer, Kaitaia left arm broken, bad cuts, and bruises. The accident happened in the last race of the day at 3.26 p.m. Mr Fitzherbert in. a Dort car had completed one lap of the course and was turning in front of the judge’s box when a Hudson car driven bv Mr Eisenhut. and approaching from the Ahipara end of the beach, came down the sand at a high speed and headed straight for the racing track. An official tried to flag the Hudson car off the course, but evidently he was not observed, as the Hudson came on without any apparent slackening of speed, and swerving very slightly struck the Dort ear amidships, just where Mrs Spender was sitting. Both cars' were completely wrecked. The occupants of the Dort were Mr Fitzherbert and Mrs Spender, and of the Hudson Messrs Eisenhut, Molloy, and Moore. AU five were thrown out. Messrs Molloy and Moore were transferred to the Mangonui Hospital. Dr H. G. Rix, of Kaitaia, administered first aid on the beach.
