FRACAS IN STREET.
MAN HIT WITH A BOTTLE. AUCKLAND, February 19. There was a fracas at the corner of Vincent and Federal streets about 11 o’clock last night, four man being involved, three of whom were stewards or waiters of the visiting pleasure liner Franconia. A local man, Francis Tanner, who limped into the dock, was charged with having assaulted John M’Cormick. He pleaded not guilty Evidence was given that the accused struck .M'Cormick with a bottle, and then ran up the street. All Tanner had to say to the magistrate was that three men from the Franconia came ashore looking for trouble. “They picked on to me, and I was the mug. I only protected myself.” ‘‘lt is a brutal thing to use a- bottle on another man,” said Mr Poynton, who sentenced Tanner to two months' imprisonment.
