GIFT TO LIBRARY.

AUCKLAND, February 4. As the result of a gift of 539 volumes by Mr Lewis R. Eady a special music section is to be established at the Auckland library. 'lhe gift was accepted by the City Council last night, appreciation of the generous offer being expressed. Mr L. A. Eady in a letter to the council said the proposal to establish a music section had interested him. Following the Libraries Conference at which he was a delegate a suggestion had then been made by Mr J - . Barr, chief, librarian, that provision should be made for a collection of books devoted to music. As an outcome Mr Barr had submitted a list of books on music and musical literature which would at present meet the city’s needs. The list had been compiled after consultation with Mr Maughan Barnett, Mr John Tait and Mr Cyril Towsey. It was estimated they would cost £250, and Mr Eady said his father, Mr Lewis R. Eady had_ agreed to purchase the books, and he himself would undertake to keep the collection up to date. The question of housing the volumes and their handling would be left to the Library Committee, a request being made that the collection be named the “Lewis Eady Music Section.” Miss E. Melville, in proposing a vote of thanks to Mr Eady for his gift, said the section would be a valuable addition to the library;. The gift showed the value of the Libraries Conference from which the present offer had arisen.
