A large fossil mussel, about six inches in diameter, Inoceramus iu pateontological language, has been added to the collections in Canterbury Museum. It is an exceptionally good specimen of a mollusc which was plentiful in the Cretaceous. Period, but which, with other creaturefl of the same class, and with the ptero--dactyls and several remarkable reptileC and the monstrous dinosaurs, failed to survive in the Tertiary Era, which immediately succeeded the Cretaceous Period. This fossil shell was found at Kaikoura, and was presented to the museum by th® Rev. G. H. Crockett, Waikari.
