Fat lamb prices were well maintained, but a slight reduction was reported in fat sheep. The prices in the cattle sections were on a par with the rates ruling at the last sale. . Fat Cattle. —There was a slightly heavier yarding than usual. WA TAREK A SALE. The greater part of the sheep offered at Tuesday’s sale at the Waiareka Yards were found in the fat pens. About 25'0 fat lambs were submitted and the best realised 275, while the others, with the exception of one pen withdrawn, sold down to ?3s 6d, the average being about 255. Of two pens of fat wethers one was passed and the ether sold at 275. About 120 fat ewes were offered, and met with a rather Weak market. The top price was 16s and other prices ranged from 15s 9d down to 13s 6d. A pen of two-tooth store wethers sold at 235, but a pen of aged ewes with lambs failed to reach the vendor’s reserve and were passed, and the same result attended the offering of three pens of store lambs. Cattle were not well represented. The fat animals consisted of 15 cows and heifers. The best of the cows brought from £6 to £6 7s 6d, and the others down to £4 17s 6d. For the best of the heifers from £6 to £6 15s was obtained, but others touched as low as £3 17a 6d. Fifteen store Hereford heifers from two and a-half to three years old failed to reach vendor’s reserve, and were withdrawn. A pen of 13 18-months old heifers found a buyer at £2 10s. There was only a small penning of pigs, and the prices obtained were:—Purebred Berkshire sows, 365; best weaners, from 25s to 30s; medium weaners, 18s to 225; and small weaners, 14s 6d to 15s.

_ OAMARU MARKETS. OAMARU. February 4. During the past week there has been very little movement in the grain market, as threshing- has scarcely yet commenced. Odd forward sales of Tuscan wheat have been made at 5s- 6d-per bushel on trucks, but the great bulk of the farmers are not prepared to do forward business at less than 6s per bushel. Fairly large parcels of ■wheat have arrived at local mills from Canterbury. These'are said -to have been purchased at prices ranging from 5s 6d to 5s 9d on trucks; In the next week or two the price for wheat may be stabilised. At present' it is full of uncertainty. Although the harvesting of Garton oats is now Mi progress, there have been few transactions for either prompt or forward delivery.- The nominal price for. A grade Gartons is 2s 6d per bushel on trucks for forward delivery, but growers are not disposed to - accept this price .in . . the meantime. Algerian oats are fetching very small prices, and are not, in demand. The price of seed Algerians is likely to be from 4s to 4s' 9d per bushel, as last year’s oats are needed for sowing. A parcel of ryecoru was sold for the northern market at 4s 6d per bushel,, f.o.b. sacks exta.

Grass seeds are not yet on the market. Perennial rye has come in to be machinedressed, but- prices for all -classes of seed are so low - that very little is offering. The live stock, market has shown greater animation than last week. Lines of mixedsex Cape lambs changed hands at 20s and 20s 9d. Sound-mouth ewes have sold at 28s to 30s, forward store lambs 20s .to 21s •6d. six and bight-tooth station wethers 20s 6d. full and failing-mouth Corriedale ewes (a good line) at 21s 6d. Fat bullocks are' still worth about 34s per 1001 b, fat heifers 30s, and fat cows 15s to 20s Fat wethers are quoted at last week’s prices, and fat lambs at schedule rates. The rape lambs will be a little later than usual, owing to the root crops being backward. ’ Dairy cows are being offered, but there is no market for them, as the season is too far advanced. There* is still a good demand for pigs, and weaners of quality are fetching big* prices. -The price that is now being paid for bacon pigs, is 6£d per lb.

; SOUTHLAND MARKETS. INVERCARGILL, February 4. The produce market, generally speaking, is at a stand still, the only business being transacted being of a retail nature. As far as oats and chaff are concerned for local users and in seeds for late and autumn sowing, the position is somewhat difficult to follow- owing to the near approach of the new crop of all descriptions even the retail buyers having an expectation that stocks held should be retailed at reduced rates. As far as oats in Southland are concerned, with the exception of that quantity that was sown in autumn, there is no chance of new being' ready for at least a further two months, possibly longer. Local values for export are 4s for’ A grade Gartons, 3s. 9d for B’s, but this is so much in excess of buyers’ limits that no business is coming to Southland merchants. The quantity of oats held is-by no means large, but it is difficult to see how stocks can be reduced before the arrival of the new crop as the local demand at this time of the year is by no means considerable. Chaff has again eased in value to

growers being now merely worth from £3 10s to £3 15s per ton on trucks according to quality, and the cost of railage from the various sidings. Ryegrass is, in the meantime, at an absolute deadlock. Merchants’ holdings are by no means large, but nevertheless have cost considerably more than the new crop will work out at after dressing, if the prevailing ideas of value are ultimately established, something in the neighbourhood of 2s. 6d per bushel for heavy-weight seed. It is generally considered that this price cannot possibly be exceeded, while Italian ryegrass is nominally worth from Is 9d to 2s per bushel from the mill. STOCK REPORT. Tho market for both fat cattle and fat sheep is well supplied and at Wallacetown sale on Tuesday the yarding was again a large one and consequently prices were easy. The quality of the fat stock coming forward is good due no doubt to an abundance of feed and the warm summer. Store sheep are selling well,, there being inquiries for all classes, and any. lots offering are soon sold. Store cattle are also selling well and prices paid leave very little margin to the Tn Hon or
