TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The tyonthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was attended by Cr Jas. W. Blair (chairman), Crs. A. Scott, F. Doherty, R. A. Kempshell, T. Carruthers, D. MTntosh and Walter Blackie. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the months of December and January had been £1912 14s Bd, and recommended for payment accounts totalling £2444 7s lid. The bank pas's book showed a debit balance of £8461 45s 6d. The expenditure for the month of December had amounted to £2465 6s lid. —Adopted. The Inspector of Works reported as follows:—

East Taieri Riding: Fifty yards of metal have been run out on Riccarton road from the railway to the main road, and at Shand’s, Wyllie’s Crossing, Gladstone road has been surfaced and repairs to the Silverstream bank on Dalziel’s property have been completed. On Main Highway No. 1, 322 yards of gravel have been run out from the Silverside dump, on the section from Riccarton to Green Island. Seventeen and a-half yards of metal have been run out to fill potholes from Riccarton to Cullen’s. The road from Allanton to Green Island has been scraped in with the small grader. On Highway No. 2 the gravel on the road has been scraped in with the small grader from Wyllie’s Crossing to Outram. This section of the Highway is in good order. The new pipe line at Saddle Hill, on Highway No. 1, under the heading of construction will be finished this week. A pipe crossing has been put in for Mr Jas. S. Blair, Riccarton, under the usual conditions, applicant supplying the pipes. North Taieri Riding: Maintenance gravel has been run out from Milner’s pit o:i Centre road, Wingatui road and Halfway Bush to Muir’s. The loose gravel on Duke’s and Wingatui roads has been scraped in with the small grader. A stone sump has been put in on the Wingatui road to drain surface water from Mr Taunahill’s gate. Gladstone road from the Wingatui road to the water race has been surfaced. Kaikorai Riding: Seventy-one yards of metal have been run out to fill potholes from Green Island to Kaikorai mouth bridge on the Green Island to .Taieri Mouth road; this has been raked in and blinded and the watertables cleaned out. Thirty-three yards of metal have been spread and blinded on the Kaikorai Valley road. M'Meqkin’s and Mount Grand roads have been surfaced and watertables have been cleaned out on the Main Highway from the Green Island boundary to Brown s

br Otokia Riding: Three hundred and twenty-seven yards of gravel have been spread on the Green Island to. Taien road from Kaikorai Bridge to Brighton. This gravel ha< been run ont by motor lorry from the new pit at Brighton, where a chute has been erected. This chute, being filled by scoops, will enable us to carry the gravel load into the lorry more cheaply The contractor for the construction of MTntosh’s road will finish this month. Plans and specifications which were forwarded to the Public Works Department for the construction of the three timber and concrete water openings on the Green Island to Taieri Mouth road, have been returned approved and the w °rk „ can pow be proceeded with. On the Mam Highway No. 1, the potholes have been tilled with ‘metal and blinded on the sections from Allanton to Hope Hill and from Henley to Taieri Ferry. The Otokia Kuri Bush road has been surfaced at Leitch s. Outram Riding: Maintenance gravel has also been run out on the Outram to Maungatua road, also on the putram to Allanton roads. Under Cameron s contract, I Main Highway No. 2. from Outram to West Taieri church, 77 yards of mamtenanee gravel has been run out and the waterholes cleaned through the main street. Nichol’s and D. to Hindon road. 1 , Maungatua Riding.—The gravelling of the Lee Canal road from Thomsons to Carruthers has been completed, the gravel being run out from the Maungatua pit. The gravelling on the Otokia-Maungatua road from the Lee Canal bridge to the main road is in progress. The HenleyBerwick road has been surfaced and the soft places on Spencer’s road have been repaired, Mr Spencer kindly assisting with teams free of cost for this work. The Outram to Berwick and Woodside roads have been surfaced. On the hill, the mam highwav, and Lee Flat roads have been surfaced. Deep Stream Riding.—The Main Highway No. 2 between the Lee stream and Sutton has been graded and surfaced. The following roads have also been surfaced: — Clark’s to Rock and Pillar, Hindon railwav, Hindon to Outram, and Hindon to Lee Stream. Strath Taieri Riding—General sunace work has been carried out in this riding, and the following roads have been surfaced: —Middlemarch to Moonlight, M'Rae’s. Stoker to Hummock, Middlemarch to HiTUimock, Robertslea, Spratt’s, Sutton to Gladbrook, Gladbrook Farm to Gladbrook station roads have been surfaced by tractor and the big grader. A pipe culvert has been put in at Gladbrook gate for Mr Roberts, Mr Roberts supplying the pipes. A pipe culvert has also been put in on the road to Mr George Howell’s on Anderson’s road. Mr Howell supplying the horse work free of cost. A heavy thunderstorm on December 28 caused considerable damage by scouring the Top road and Sutton to Gladbrook road near Mr George Kidd’s. The men have been engaged during the month in repairing same. —Adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported favourably on the slaughterhouses in the county, the Green Island piggeries, and the boilingdoSvn works at Kaikorai Valley.—Received. - The Ranger reported having impounded 34 head of' cattle during the month. —Received. CORRESPONDENCE.

Treasury vouchers were received as follows:—!Main Highways, £515 13s lid; sanitary fees, £3 10s; land fund. £l5 13s 2d; subsidy on rates, £1202 16s 3d; goldfields revenue, £1 3s. —Received. The District Telegraph Engineer notified that he intended to open roads at points shown on an accompanying plan, in connection with telephone extension works in the district. —Received and approved. R. L. Christie wrote agreeing to pay £5 towards the cost of new pipes for culvert, Gladstone road, at his place.—Received and accepted. J. A. Fowler, Dukes road, wrote pointing out the necessity of cutting hedges at the corner of Wingatui and Dukes road, the view being obstructed. —Hedges to bo cut. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote in reply to the council’s letter regarding Leishman’s Ford proposals, and approving of them. The Otago Motor Club telephoned approval of the same matter.—The Chairman explained that the bridge proposal had been rescinded, and that the concreted ford would be proceeded with. —Agreed to. Letters were received from the Green Island Borough Council as follows: —(a) Regarding construction of footpath Brighton, cost £120; it would pay half that amount; in reply regarding lights on boundary roads, giving cost of erection. —It was decided to pay half cost of footpath, but to decline to contribute towards the lighting. A notice was read from the Inspector cf Noxious Weeds regarding gorse and the gravel pit, Brighton, and on- Bedford Parade. —Inspector to see what he can do in this matter.

The Brighton Advancement Society wrote asking the council to reconsider its decision of last meetng not to insist c-n fences and buildings at Brighton being removed to their proper boundary.—Chairman and Cr MTntosh to investigate during the month. Mrs A. C. Farra, Brighton, wrote regarding alterations to culvert at her gate, which would not now be used for motors.— Chairman and Cr MTntosh to examine and report. D. Forrester wrote regarding gravelling of footpath leading from the road to his property at Brighton.—Cr MTntosh and inspector to attend to it. Mrs M. Grant, of “Cray.” wrote regarding pipe crossings at Dyer’s dairyfactory, near Outram, being too small; water accumulated and flowed over the road on to her farm.—Member for riding and inspector to examine and report. Letters were received from the Taieri River Trust as follows:—(a) Asking permission to cross the Henley-Berwick road with pipe culvert, opposite Lyders Bros.’ (b) Accepting the council’s offer to pay half-cost up to f2 10s of lowering culvert near George Patrick’s. —Received aiid approved. A. E. Scorgie, Lee Flat, wrote regarding grading of Lee Flat road. He offered teams free of cost. —Offer accepted, and

work to be attended to. R. M. Johnston, Sutton, wrote respecting piece of land purchased by the county in section 15, block XIII, Sutton, for road purposes. He would buy the portion cut off by road if council would sell. — Price fixed, plus survey and transfer expenses, applicant to be notified. Robert Kidd, Sutton, wrote regarding road from his place to Sutton siding. It required attention. —Matter being attended to.

Applications for buildings permits werd received from J. H. Moir (Brighton), J. K. Buchanan (Brighton), P. Gosney (Brighton), J. O’Donnell (Allanton), and John M'Leod (Maungatua) .—All granted but that of P. Gosney, this being declined as the timber used was unsuitable for a dwelling. _ An application for a slaughterhouse license was received from W. S. Williams, Middlemarch. He enclosed plan of the structure and yards.—To be approved when certain recommendations made by the inspector were attended to. The Jubilee Coal Company applied for the necessary permission to put through two drives under the old Brighton road, to enable it to work coal in the property of the late Mr James Howorth. —Granted, subject to the usual conditions. GENERAL. Tenders for dog collars for 1927 were received, and that of J. M’Grath and Co. was accepted. The dog tax was fixed at the same rate as last year. , A special meeting was held at the close the ordinary meeting to decide by resolution the weekly half-holiday for shops. It was decided to continue as at persent. On Cr MTntosh’s motion it was decided to obtain a report on the cost of surveying and purchase of necessary laud for a deviation on Scrogg’s Hill road.
