DUNEDIN GAS WORKS.

EXTENSION OF PT, A NT. During the year ended March 31, 1925 the output of gas from the City Corporation gasworks was 224,554,693 cubic feet and for the following year 249,534,631 cubic feet—an ’ increase of 24,979,958 cubic feet. It is anticipated that this year’s figures will show another considerable increase, and to cope with the ever growing demand the corporation some time ago decided to extend the plant at the gasworks on the Anderson’s Bay road. Included in the programme of alterations were new stores, new and larger meter and carpenter’s shops, and more commodious and convenient. demonstration and show rooms, all of which are now housed in a large brick structure which has just been completed, and stands on the roadline on the harbour side of the works. The demonstration room is splendidly fitted for its purpose, and in future, it is expected that demonstrations will be held there about twice a month.

The showroom which will be open to the public between the hours of nine and four, contains a comprehensive exhibit of all-the latest cooking and heating appliances which are well displayed. The present carbonising plant" at the works has a capacity of about 1,000,060 cubic, feet of gas per day, which, at the rate at which the demand for gas is increasing, will be quite inadequate within a year or two, and with this fact in view, a contract has been let for .the erection of a much larger carboniser of the most up-to-date design, which will be able to produce 1,500,000 cubic feet daily. . The contract has been secured by Messrs Glover, West, and Co., of England, who expect to commence the erection of the new plant in about two months’ time. The car-: boniser will take. at least- two years to construct. In connection with this carboniser a new and thoroughly modern coalhandling plant.will also be installed. Suburban residents who have had cause to complain of the pressure in their gasburners will soon find that this trouble is eliminated, as there will shortly be installed in an engine house speciallv built for it, a pumping engine which will reinforce the existing pressure in the mains, so that gas will arrive at the farthest away point at the same pressure as it leaves the ■ works.
