ALLEGED LIBELS.
CLAIM FOR £7OOO. WRIT AGAINST CHRISTCHURCH PRESS COMPANY. CHRISTCHURCH. January 28. A writ was issued to-day on behalf of Mr Cyrus J. K. Williams, engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, against the Christchurch Press Company, claiming £7OOO damages in respect to alleged libels published by the defendant company. The statement of claim alleges that seven libels were published reflecting on the plaintiff, and £lOOO is claimed in respect of each of the alleged libels. The publications complained of were contained in letters signed by the Port and City Committee. The statement of ’claim quotes at considerable length from the letters, and contends that they were damaging to the professional reputation of the plaintiff. The case will be a jury case, and in the ordinary way would come on at ariv time after February 15. It is quite possible, however, that there will be an application for a special jury and for a special fixture of the Supreme Court. The. plaintiff is not proceeding against individual members of the Port and Christchurch Committee.
A special fruit train is now running daily from Miller’s Flat to Milton to meet the requirements of fruit-growers in Teviot district, and will continue whilst the necessity 'exists. ■'■'
