HOLD-UP OF CARGO.
CONGESTION AT LYTTELTON. CHRISTCHURCH. January 18. “It is the worst hold-up we have cx> perienced for years.” That is how a rail way goods agent described the situatiol this morning which has been_ caused b) the fact that, pending the striking of al average adjustment by the underwriterig the consignees of cargo unloading from the Remuera are unable to get delivery of their goods from the Railways Department's I> shed. The situation has drawn attention from the Canterbury Progress which has arranged for a visit of inspectioa to-morrow. A total of 10 wagons is held under load. The hold-up,, owing to the-question of fire losses caused by an outbreak on tha Remuera, has come at an unfortunate time, there being a tremendous amount of cargo to be dealt with from Lyttelton. The position in' the present instance has been complicated, however, by reason of the fact that? as the Remuera came direct' to Lyttelton, the necessary papers for consignees did not precede it. The hold-up has lasted for nine days now. The actual damage to cargo in the sheds appears to be slight. Smoke and water, have worked the mischief, there -being no: damage *so far, as a casual scrutiny goes' to show, from the flames.
