A very delightful day was spent at Trentham on the occasion of the first day of the summer race meeting, and though lhe attendance was not particularly large, tho frocking was charming. The lawns and gardens were in full beauty, green in the ons case, and massed with summer blooms in the other, and the moving panorama of artistic frocks made a very fine picture. Black, or black and white held its own, though interspersed with many floral voiles and chiffons, vivid taffetas frocks, and checked and stripped shantungs, and other silks. The high-crowned Directoire hat in black satin or hatter’s plush was, perhaps, chief favourite, adorned with “brush” feathers, or jewelled ornaments, followed by a ' wide-brimmed hat, down-turned over the eyes' and up-turned at the back, with wide, velvet bows Parasols were gay .and handsome, with elaborate handles and a number of charming bags completed costumes satisfactorily. Skirts were decidedly longer, and knees were not such a prominent feature of the day as on the last occasion, while the stockings and shoes get more and more elaborate and expensive looking. Miss Harcourt presented the Cup to the lucky winner, and was gowned in wine-coloured silk rep, with a wide hat of the same shade; Lady Clifford wore black with a -wide black hat •adorned with ivory lace; Miss Clifford

Nicol, of Christchurch, and received much admiration. It shows Miss M’Lean seated and holding a book, wearing her academical robes over a vivid blue satin gown. The background is grey, with the college arms in one corner.
