A SURF TRAGEDY
TWO PERSONS DROWNED. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 20. Greenmeadows Beach, Opunake, was the scene of a surf tragedy this evening, Mary Doreen Hammond, aged 26, and Thomas Pennington, aged 28, both of Mangatoki, being drowned. The girl called at a bach on the beach and asked for a rope and a belt, as she was going to be taught to swim. She was warned by Mr N. R. M'Kenzie (New Plymouth) that the sea was dangerous, and was advised to swim in the river, but she said she liked the sea. The couple were seen to go into the sea, but were presently missed. Mr M'Kenzie immediately telephoned to . the Opunake Life-saving Club, half a mile away, and in 20 minutes the team was on the spot. The. body of the girl was found floating
on the surface of the water, and the efforts of a doctor for half an hour failed to revive any sign of life. Men were patrolling the beach to-night, but at a late hour there was no trace or the man’s body. In the commendable attempt at rescue a member of the team, George Mayor, got into difficulties, but was brought ashore by his brother Jack.
