FIRST IMPORTANT STEP. LONDON, September 1. The first important step in the Empire air-*oute is definitely announced by Imperial Airways (Ltd.), to commence on “New Years Day. Five large passenger and mail aeroplanes, triple-engined, and developing 1200h.p., will be employed. One will leave Cairo on alternate Wednesdays connecting with the Peninsular liner from England. It will land at Bagdad on Thursday, the passengers and mails which will there be transferred to another air liner which will fly via the Persian Gulf to Karachi, arriving on Saturday in time to connect with the trans-Indian train for Delhi and Calcutta. Tho return flight from Karachi will be commenced on the following Thursday, Bagdad being reached on Saturday and Cairo on Sunday in time to connect with the liners for Marseilles. Through passengers will spend three nights in specially constructed rest houses in the desert. A saving of five to eight days will be affected on the journey from London to India.
