Now that a settlement has been readufl|j' with the coal-miners in the Auckland didtrict, there only remains the negotiations with the Southland miners to complete a twrayears’ agreement with the whole of the ooaßniners of the Dominion. Tjhq Auckland agreement is exactly on same lines as -that arrived at on the West Coast of the South Island (remarks tfie Dominion). The conference between the Southland mine-owners and the represents- ** tives of the miners will take place next week.
A report that floods during the menffh had been responsible for heavy damage in various parts of the country was mooo to the meeting of the Thames County Council by the engineer, Mr J. Higgins. The most serious mishap oocurred in the Hastings Riding, where the Waikanau Bridge had been partly washed away. A pier had been moved out of position and generally was now in a very decayed state. A new bridge of the re-* quired tvpe would cost £4OOO. The Public Works Department had been advised of ' the position and would convey its decision to the council.
