During the hearing of a collision case in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court it was stated that a whisky bottle and glasses found in a solicitor’s car had been there for some months. The Magistrate remarked that it was hardly likely that a solicitor, when visiting a co-practitioner’s house, would have to take his own 2s worth of whisky. “If he does,” said his Worship, ** it i 9 a very poor compliment to the other fellow’s hospitality.”—(Laughter.) Discussing the advantage to bo derived by draining the swamp areas in South Westland and planting them in flax, Mr Jamieson, at a meeting of the West Coast Farmers' Union, saiJ the West Coast was well adapted for growing flax (reports the Greymouth Star), the climate being particularly suitable. It was flax growing, not forestry, that would pay, the latter being, in his opinion, a ‘‘white elephant.” At tho Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, Victor Harris, aged 28 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of perjury, and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. Bail was refused.
