The first round of the senior grade was concluded on Saturday last, and when matches resume on Saturday week the four top teams will form an “A” division and the remainder the “B” division. Next Saturday Otago will meet Wellington in the E.F.A. Cup Competition. The results of Saturday’s games and positions of the teams are as under:— Kaitangata ... 4 Seacliff 2 O.H.S. Old Boys 1 Southern 0 Technical College 1 Y.M.C.A 1 Northern 2 Mormngton ... 1 -Maori Hill ... 2 Mosgiel 2 Goals Cup

KAITANGATA v. SEACLIFF. A fair number of spectators witnessed tbe game between Kaitangata and Seacliff at Culling Park. Seacliff took the field minus M'Dougall and Uogers, and played with nine men until close on half-time, when one substitute came on. Kaitangata kicked off, and even play marked the opening stages. Hooper had a shot which went outside, and Uurin did likewise "tor Kaitangata. A well placed pass by Dickson to the centre looked dangerous for Kaitangata. Munsie recovered and sent Chambers away, but the latter s shot went over. Barro and Simmomls were prominent for the Blues, but Kaitangata s defence cleared and M‘Cormack opened up play with Thompson, a shot by the winger striking the crossbar and a penalty against Anderson followed. Chambers scored with a hard drive Kaitangata 1 goal, Seacliff nil. A free kick to Kaitangata was well returned by Cooper the attack being Stopped by M‘Auley and a series of advances followed by Kaitangata. A fine shot by Rarity was well saved by Rivers. Seacliff were breaking through on occasions and Cooper and Hooper forced the kaitangata backs to give a corner to relieve a dangerous moment. The corner was of no advantage. but Dickson by a long pass put Hooper in position, and the centre-forward screwed a fine shot past Campbell and equalised the scores. Kaitangata launched two succes give attacks, from one of which Chambers almost hooked the ball into goal. Dickson, following a corner kick, again placed nicely to Hooper, but this time M'Auley smothered the shot, and Simmons relieved by kicking over. M'Cormaek ran through with the ball at his toes, but shot instead of crossing, and Anderson came through with the ball to place for Hooper, who shot over. Play was more even. Cooper was defending well for Seacliff, and Chambers, the opposing centre, got few opportunities to get going. Campbell, the Kaitangata goalie, made a fine save from a shot by Baillie, and a further attack by Seacliff was repulsed by M'Aulay. Following a throw-in, M'Cormack received and made straight for goal, his parting shot going just inside the post and giving Rivers no chance. Kaitangata 2, Seacliff lr Seacliff opened up brightly in the second half, Dickson, Gillespie, and Baillie combining well, but Hooper shot over. Kaitangata returned by way of their right, and Dunn’s shot missed, but the winger shortly afterwards neatly t.icked Anderson and dropped a high shot to goal, Rivers misguiding the flight and the ball was deflected into the net. Kaitangata 3, Seacliff 1. Keen play followed in midfield, the defence of both sides holding up the forwards' advances. Simmons and Hooper both essayed long drives at goal without- success, Campbell clearing with safety. Kaitangata's left wing again got going, and Thompson centred across the goal mouth, the ball travelling to Dunn, whose shot was cleared by Anderson conceding a corner. The kick, beautifully placed by Thompson, was headed into the net by Rarity. Kaitangata 4, Seacliff 1. Play became more interesting, Seacliff launching determined attacks, which were repulsed, but Anderson ana Cooper, by steady defence, again sent their forwards away. M'Auley and Munsie, however, kept tne forwards out

until Baillie, receiving a pass from Dickson, scored with a shot from the line. Kaitangata 4, Seacliff 2. Kaitangata livened up, and good play on their left had Seacliff’s goal in danger, but Chambers was not jjs position when the cross earner and Anderson cleared. Combined play 1 between Simmons and Gillespie shifted play to Rv*itangata’B goal, where Campbell saved by coming out to meet the ball. The final incident of note was a shot by Dunn, which skimmed the post outside. Final result:— Kaitangata 4 goals. Seacliff 2 goals. Mr Budge was referee. NORTHERN v. MORNINGTON. The match between Northern and Mornington, played at the Gardens ground, provided an interesting but at times lifeless display. Mornington did a good deal of attacking throughout the game, although handicapped by the absence of Braham in the second spell. Both sides played attractive football at intervals, and many opportunities of scoring were missed, but the defence of both teams generally managed to clear at the moment of danger, and the final score, resulting in a victory for Northern by two goals to one, was a fair reflection of the play. Mornington, with the advantage of the down grade, strenuously attacked in the early stages. Johnson, Lee, and M'Gregor did good work, but the efforts of the torwards broke down before the determined defence of the Black-and-Whites, notably Dryden, Coates, and Mackle. The Northern attacks through Faithful, W. Dryden, and Duncan shared a similar fate against Dickel and Braithwaite, until a nice effort by W. Dryden, who was smart in his movements, gave Northern thv. first goal, Braham, in Mornington goal, having no chance of stopping Dryden’s strong shot. Both sides attacked in turn, to the interval, Johnson, Finlayson, Le Gal, Watkins, and Lee being prominent on the visitors’ side, and Faithful, Dryden, Jones, and Mackle for Northern. Braham and M'Quarrie got a fair amount of work to do in goal, and always cleared confidently. The shooting of the forwards was not of a high order, M’Hugh, of Northern, being the only exception. From the start of the second spell Mornington pressed, Mackle clearing, and a spell of midfield play followed. Braham stopped a hard shot from Cherry at the other end, but Mornington broke away el ortly afterwards, and after a nice run Lowden equalised with a low shot out of M'Quarrie’s reach. From the kick-off Northern pressed hard, and a shot from M'Hugh was dealt with by Braham. Duncan charged the goalkeeper, who cleared smartly. Braham appeared to resent the charge, and came under the ban of the referee. J. Dryden forced a corner, and Duncan placed this nicely across, but Mornington’s defence cleared. Midfield play ruled. Jones, J. Dryden, and Northern backs showing out on one side, and the Johnsons. Dickel, and Finlayson for Mornington. Mornington were having slightly the better of matters for a time, until a fine movement by Northern’s forward line ended in M'Hugh scoring with a fast shot that Braithwaite, in Morningtoh’s goal, could not reach. From the kick-off Northern pressed hard, but were unable to increase their score. Mr Gilchrist refereed the game. The final scores were: Northern 2 goals. Mornington 1 goal. TECHNICAL 15 OLD BOYS v. Y.M.C.A. Oval No. 3 wag very heavy and slippery for the game between Technical Old Boys and Y.M.C.A Except for the latter half of the second spell, play was ragged and very uninteresting. The game was only worth the result as there was little difference between the two teams. Y.M.C.A. kicked off, and Technical Old Boys had to concede a corner when Y.M.C.A. pressed. From a good corner Holden cleared with a hefty punch. Old Boys’ forwawls rushed the ball to the other end, but G. Taylor cleared. Clothier placed in a fine centre, but W hyte placed over the bar —a good attempt. J. Middlemass, Witchall, and Morrow indulged in neat work, but they were unable to pierce the Y.M.C.A. defence. Play was ragged till Clothier came into prominence by a nice run down the left wing, which run he finished off by a great centre, which Holden came right out to save. Y.M.C.A. continued on attack, and /l. Macpherson drove in a shot from 30 yards out, and the ball badly beat the goalkeeper, placing the Reds in the lead. Y.M.C.A. 1, Old Boys nil. Technical Old Boys took the offensive, and after Hector, Morrow, and Witchall had pierced the defence, Whitehall's shot struck the upright—a lucky escape for the Reds. Old Boys tried hard to equalise, but Stubbs, ably supported by Taylor, was clearing well. O’Rorke and Whyte gave Donnelly a good opening, but Holden cleared his shot, though he fumbled badly before getting his side out of danger. All Old Boys’ forwards participated in a dangerous passing rush, but Morrow spoilt a good chance by a poor shot. Wright placed in a lovely shot, which Wills just tipped over the bar. At this stage play was poor, with the advantage in favour of the Old Boys, who were not showing their true form. .Occasionally led his forwards in dangerous movements, but the Reds were safe on defence, halftime found Y.M.C.A. in the lead. From the kick-off Technical pressed, and Taylor gave a corner. Batchelor kicked a good corner, and Wright’s shot hit the upright. A few minutes later Wills had to clear from a melee. Play veered to the Technical’s goal, but Holden came well out to clear. Donnelly tested Holden with a sound drive. J. Middlemass and Wright worked the ball down the left wing, and a shot from Wright struck the cross-bar and bounced into play, enabling Culberfc to equalise with a low drive. Technical Old Boys 1, Y.M.C.A. 1. With the score level, both teams showed a marked improvement in their play, and the game reached a higher standard. Holden was kept busy, and Clothier missed a good opening made by Whyte. Hector made an opening for Middlemass, whose shot Wills cleared. Scott was penalised for “hands,” and G. Taylor placed the free kick to his brother, who placed just outside. R. Macpherson passed to Whyte, who placed to O’Rorke, who centred well, but Holden saved a hot shot from F. Taylor. The game brightened up, play moving up and down the field at a fast pace. Y.M.C.A. were lucky to clear from a melee in froat of

goal. Donnelly next showed out in a nice solo effort, but Whyte missed with his shot. Honours were even till time was called. Technical Old Boys .. 1 goal. Y.M.C.A 1 goal. OTAGO HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS v. SOUTHERN. At Culling Park, High School and Southern followed on alter the Kaita-ngata-Seacliff match, and provided a more interesting game than the previous one. School kicked off from the south end, but Southern secured and Jones put in a centre, which Proctor placed outside the posts. The Reds again attacked, but Caskie cleared. Buchan conceded a corner which proved resultless. Chapman secured and placed to Douglas, whose shot struck the cross-bar. The rebound was turned outside by Duncan. Brown was prominent in some good foot work, but over-kicked. Trevathan cleared, but Gould returned the ball to the goal mouth and M'Kenzie brought off a fine save from Pattrick. The Reds returned to the attack, and Caskie saved brilliantly from a shot by Proctor. Balchin gave his forwards a chance, but Caskie fisted the ball to nearly half-way, and Gould let Douglas away to shoot over the bar. Chapman opened up to Latimer, who centred well, and things looked bad for Southern when Trevathan mis-kickcd, giving Pattrick an opportunity to pass to Douglas, whose shot' was well held by M'Kenzie. Chapman secured from the return, and his shot just passed outside Southern rallied, and a fast centre from the left saw an open goal go begging. Caskie fisted out on two occasions, and then School attacked. A smart piece of play by Duncan beat several opponents, and a splendid shot .struck the crossbar. Douglas received from the rebound and made no mistake. High School Old Boys 1, Southern nil. Proctor was prominent, but lost chances through hanging on too long, although several fine drives by the centre were safely dealt with by Caskie. Half-time saw the score unaltered, with Southern pressing. On resuming, Southern set up a hot attack. Buchan conceded a corner, and Wallace’s smart header was tipped over the bar by Caskie. School attacked, and a pretty piece of play by Duncan and Latimer, which had the backs well beaten, saw Pattrick tip a centre by Latimer over his head, and narrowly miss the goal. Offside spoiled a likely Southern chance, but undaunted they strove hard to score, and were unlucky on several occasions. Pryde and Caskie were prominent on defence. Play continued fast, and moved rapidly up and down. Carrick (Southern) shot over, and Douglas did the same at the other end. Proctor essayed a shot which Caskie saved. Balchin was defending well for Southern, but his attacking movements were weak. Barr saved his side repeatedly, and sent Latimer away in fine style. The closing stages saw Old Boys pressing hard. M’Kenzie conceded several -corners. Latimer sent in two good shots i n- succession, and Duncan was unlucky in not finding the net. Time was called with School in front of goal, and an even game, controlled by Mr Sudden, ended: O.H.S. Old Boys 1 goal. Southern Nil. MOSGIEL v. MAORI HILL. Mosgiel were at home to Maori Hill, when the game ended in a two-goal draw. AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS. A considerable portion of the time occupied by the weekly meeting of the Otago Football Association on July 5 was devoted to a discussion on the incidents which occurred at the Maori HillHigh School Old Boys’ match on Prospect Park on the 3rd, when it was alleged that supporters of the Maori Hill team, dissatisfied with the rulings of the referee, rushed on the field of play, the referee being shouldered by a player and struck by a player or spectator, following a decision to award a penalty against a Maori Hill player, who had replaced the injured goalkeeper. At this stage of the game it was also alleged that the Maori Hill team commenced to leave the field. When consideration of the incidents came before the meeting the Chairman asked for an exprewion of opinion whether the matter were to be taken in committee or not. Mr Smith inquired what the usual procedure was. The Chairman remarked that it would not do to give too much publicity to the inquiry. m Mr Smith: A certain amount of publicity has already appeared. Mr Cook: If we take the business in committee it will be necessary to the decision arrived at after the inquiry.

—The Chairman concurred.—Mr Smitl} then moved that the discussion be taken in committee, and this motion was carried without dissent. An exhaustive inquiry was then held, evidence being heard from tho referee, representatives of the Maori Hill Club, and an outside spectator, and the following decisions arrived at were confirmed in open meetug: That Martin, left full-back for Maori Hill, be suspended for the remainder of the season for jostling the referee. That the Maori Hill Club’ be writte* to expressing strong disapproval of the conduct of its players and spectators during the course of the Otago HighSchool Old Boys’-Maori Hill match, and that it be notified that any repetition will result in disqualification of the club.
