The past week has been another bare one bo far as the Oamaru merchants are concerned. There has been little doing m cereals of this season’s growth, though forward sales o ( next season’s wheat crop have been made. A few small offerings of wheat have been made, and one line of Tuscan has changed hands at 7s per bushel. A email quantity of seed wheat has gone out, if northern reports are to be relied upon. Bran and pollard, which were expected to harden owing to the shortage of wheat, are being supplied in large quantities from Australia. The oat market has been very dull, ""here is a good deal still on the farm, but growers will not sell at the prices offering. One line of A Gartons changed hands at 3s 5d per bushel, on truck, at country stations. There does not appear to be any immediate prospect of the position improving, as northern markets have been well supplied with the imported article. The nominal price for B Gartons is 3s 2d per bushel, on trucks. Barley is in request, but there is such a disparity between buyers’ and sellers' ideas of values that little business has taken place. Seed oats, Chevalier barley, and grass teed have been going out during the week in fair quantities. The potatoYnarket has been erratic. Early in the week as high as £6 per ton was paid on trucks, at country stations but the report of the rejection of a Melbourne shipment, together with other elements, have resulted in the market receding. The price to-day is from £5 5s to £5 10s per ton. Oaten sheaf chaff has declined a little compared with last week. A line of 1000 bags of good, bright changed hands at £5 per ton, on trucks. The nominal price is from £5 5s to £5 10s. There has not been much animation in the live stock market, and the major portion of the sales effected have been for the purpose of filling butchers’ requirements. At the Waiareka sale fat wethers sold at from SOs to 325, prime ewes at from 20s to 23s 9d, and ordinary ewes at from 16s to 18e 6d. Store sheep have been sold as follows: Ewe hoggets, 27s to 29s 6d; mixed-sex hoggets, 21s to 24s 9d; wether hoggets, 17s 6d; wethers, 25s to 29s 9d. Fat bullocks have been dealt in privately at prices approximating 40s per 1001 b. Beef cows have sold at from £7 10s to £8 10s. Dairy cows of quality coming to profit are in good request, the prices vary according m age and breed. As snowing the demand for good stuff, it may be mentioned that a Holstein heifer coming to first calf realised £lO 10s at the Waiareka sale. Figs are being freely offered, but are not meeting with keen competition. Slips are selling at auction at 23s to 81s; best weaners, 20s to 22s 6d; medium weaners, 16s Cd to 18s: small weaners. 12s to 14s. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. INVERCARGILL, July 9. GRAIN. Oats—Little business is passing, save in so far as merchants are concerned in the booking up of retail orders for seed purposes and for local feeding requirements. Offers from outside are somewhat below merchants’ ideas of value, and no business of that description worth recording has taken place during the week. Offerings are now so few and far between from growers that marohants are still more disinclined to reduce their ideas of value, 4s 3d for A grade, 4s for B grade, f.0.b., s.i. Chaff.—This market is distinctly dull, offerings being in excess of requirements of

the local market. Farmers are finding it difficult to quit. The utmost that merchants are prepared to pay is £4 10s, on trucks, for prime quality. Stocks being ample for the small looal demand, buyers are by no means keen to operate. Ryegrass.—As anticipated, there is now a strong inquiry for ryegrass from northern centres, though ideas of prices are somewhat at variance. Local merchants are strongly of the opinion that the bulk of the good quality seed is already in their hands, ana consequently are by no means inclined to accept offers from northern parts which are largely baßcd on values of low quality or mixed seed of poor germination. Nominally the vaiue for 271 b to 28lb machine-dressed seed is 5s 3d per bushel, but few sellers are to be found in Invercargill at this price today. STOCK REPORT. The stock market is firm for all classes offering, and prices for fat stock during the past two weeks showed a slight rise. The yarding of fat sheep at Wallacetown was smaller than for some considerable time, and this, no doubt, had the effect of firming the prices. The yarding of fat cattle was also a bit lighter than for the two previous •ales, and any of good quality forward met with keen competition. There are very few good lines of store sheep on offer and prices are very firm for any which come on the market. HORSE SALE. The Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association of New Zealand (Limited) htlj its monthly sale of horses in the saleyards on July 9, when an entry of 45 horses was offered by auction. The entry included some useful farm sorts, with a few specially nice mares and geldings but otherwise the entry had Tittle of quality to recommend it. The attendance of the public wfes good, and fairly representative of the surrounding districts and, with the exception of three, the whole entry changed stables at prices which must have been considered highly satisfactory. The top prioe was for a fine clippy gelding, which changed hands at £52. Another young,

useful sort brought £45, while from £55 to £42 represented good farm horses. Spring carters and light vanners made from £l9 to £32 and ponies to £l6. Droy and stall sorts were difficult to market, and brought reduced prices.
