As the result of the destruction of a verandah recently two Chinese were charged at the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, one with negligently driving a motor lorry and the other with aiding and abetting. In dismissing the cases, Air J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., said that if a man set out to drive without the skill required on a city street, or without reasonable ground to believe he possessed it, he would be guilty of negligence. In this case both the defendant and his tutor thought defendant was competent, but when he encountered the traffic he had lost his head. The Customs duty collected in Wellington during June totalled £197,131 and the beer duty £4767, the amounts being a considerable increase on those for the same month last year.
