WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 1. Judging by the amount of accommodation besooken there will be no shortage of competitors at the forthcoming meeting at Trentham. It is reported that Mr E. L. Riddiford has purchased the Southland performer Buoyant, who is engaged at the forthcoming meeting. F. D. Jones leases for Sydney tomorrow' by the Ulimaroa, with his team of four. The lightweight T. Green will go over after the Wellington meeting. Jones also has charge of Count Cavour. F. C. Porter was in town to-day making arrangements for the horse for the trip. The Count does not like boat travelling, and had special quarters fixed up for him. The horses sent across to Sydney last week to J. M'Combe were the three-year-olds Rebuke (Clarenceux-Reproachful) and Glenalmond (Bonny Glen—Prim). Both were formerly in G. MurrayAynsle.v’s stable ut Riccarton, and are eligible for maiden races. Several of the Trentham trainers have been laid up with influenau, but ure getting all right again. Gauntlet, recently purchased by the Hon. K. 8. Williams at the Hastings sales, is to join H. B. Lorrigan’s team at Trenthaci. Mr E. L. Riddiford just failed to win the double at Hawke’s Bay with Master Peter and Dubious. This wai the first meeting that Captain J. Gage Williams had the horses. The Trentham-trained Matu (Polvdamon—Pcnroe) scored his first win in the Hack Hurdle event on the concluding day at Hawke’s Bay. He is only four years old, so is yet young for the hurdle business. He is owned by Mr Frank Newman, son of the late Dr Newman. Clareina (Clarenceux —Lady Reina), recently sold by J. JJ. Pearson, the Ric-

carton trainer, was shipped to Sydney to-day. The acceptances received for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Winter meeting are regarded as very satisfactory. There has been only one withdrawal from the Stewards’ Handicap; all the horses with any form remain in the big steeplechase; there are 24 iu the Whyte Memorial, against 14 for the corresponding race last winter; and 22 against 18 for the Winter Hurdles, run on the concluding day.
