A curious anomaly exists in Hamilton re* garding the employment of girls.' Many young women who desire positions in shops and offices are unemnloved (remarks the New Zealand Herald), but a girl who advertised for domestic employment received no fewer than 54 replies. The change in millinery fashions has been responsible for the reduction of the number of assistants employed in some of the draners’ shops. The building permits issued in Invercargill for June snow a decided drop compared with those for the previous month, the figures being £10,815 and £25.039 respectively. In June of last year the total for tne month was £27,329, but at that time several substantial buildings were in the course of construction, whereas at present the bulk of the work for which permits have been issued are mainly for renovations and alterations to existing premises.
