WEATHER SUMMARY.

THE MONTH OF JUNE. EXCEPTIONALLY DRY PERIOD. An exceptionally fine period was recorded for tire month of June. There were 22 fine days, rain falling only on eight days. The long spell of fine weather was exceptional for midwinter, and the 30-day period wa9 in striking contrast to the month of June last year, when a heavy rainfall was recorded. The rainfall during the past month was very light and widely spaced. There was a very light fall on June 5, followed by five bright, sunny days. On June 11 the rainfall was only .4in. Two fine davs followed, and on June 14 the recorded rainfall was in The weather tjras fine on June 15, but rain fell on June 16, when 26in were recorded. Nine days of bright sunshine followed. On June 26 an overcast sky indicated a change, and there was a very light fall, .3in being recorded. Another day of sunshine followed, but another change was recorded on June 28. when 25in ol rain fell. There was a light fall on June 29. and a heavily-laden sky indicated that bad weather had set in. The fall from 9 a.m. on June 29 to 9 a.m. on the 30th was for the 31 hours ending at 4 p.m. on the 30th totalled .59in. The total rainfall for the past month, as shown by the records compiled at the Musselburgh PumpingsStation, was 1.24 in. This was the lightest fall for the month of June during the past five or six years. During June last year the total rainfall was 2.06 in. and 2.72 in during June. 1924. Being midwinter, however, a drop in the temperature was . to be expected, but there were only a small number of days on which I he atmosphere could be termed very chilly. Being tlia sixth month of the year, there was very little heat from the sun’s rays. The temperature was very bracing throughout the month. The average daily maximum temperature was about 44, and the average daily minimum 33, representing in eaeh,case a drop of about two degrees, as compared with the thermometer readings for the month of May. The lowest readings were recorded on June 3, when the mercury stood at 30deg (minimum) and 40deg (maximum). The temperature was almost as chilly on June 0, when the readings were 30Ueg and 41deg, -minimum and maximum respectively. The temperature was also on the cold side on June 1. 2,9, 13, 14, 19, and 20, when the readings averaged 32deg (minimum) and 43deg (maximum). The warmest day was on June 23, when the mercury rose to 04deg (maximum). On June 24 the reading! were 38deg and Q2deg, minimum and maximum respectively. ▲ balmy day was recorded on June 12, when the mercury climbed as higli as B2deg (maximum). For several days in ■uccesalon about the middle of June the maximum reading was from 47deg to SOdeg. The mercury fell towards the end of the month, the readings on June 20 being 38deg and 47deg minimum and maximum respectively. On June 27 the maximum reading was 44deg, on Juno 28

the reading was 45<leg, and on June 29 the maximum was 43deg. The barometer readings were exceptionally high during the greater part of the past month. The readings were very high in the early part of June. On June 1 the mercury showed 30.50 at 8 a.m. and 30.47 at 5 p.m. The mercury showed a falling tendency on June 2,3, and 4, when it fell from 30.02 to 29.72. The barometer again showed a rising tendency on June 5, the highest reading on that date being 30.10. On June 7 the reading at 5 p.m. was 30.25, and 30.30 at the same hour on June S. Two days later the mercury again showed a falling tendency, the reading at 5 p.m. on June 10 being 29.95. On Jnne 11. 12, 13, and 14 the readings at 5 p.m. were 29.71. 29.32, 29.33, and 29.09 respectively. These were the lowest readings during the month. The barometer showed a rising tendency on June 15, the highest reading on that date being 29.97. On June 16 the mercury rose to 30.09 at 5 p.m. Thereafter the barometer rose quickly, and remained over the 30.00 mark for 10 days. On June 17 the reading at 5 p.m. was 30.15. The mercury rose to 30.25 oi i June 18, to 30.35 on June 19, and to 30.40 on June 20. On June 21 the reading at 5 p.m. was 30.35, and the following day the reading was 30.39. There was a further rise on June 23, when the mercury stood at 30.44 at 5 p.m. From thence onwards the barometer began to fall. At 5 p.m. on June 24 the rending was 30.29, and 30.06 at the same hour on June 26. The evening readings on June 27, 28, and 29 were 29.83, 29.61, and 29.56 respectively. SEACLIFF WEATHER NOTES. The month of June has given us a very good sample of fine winter weather. The first half of the month was almost without rain, with mild frost prevailing. Since then the weather broke, followed by about eight fine days, during which there was practically no frost. The closing six days brought a period of easterly weather, bringing cold rain, fog, and a drizzle off the sea.

Rain fell on 10 days, making a total of 1.29 inches —a marked decrease on the month of May, with 5.02 inches for 24 days of rain.

The thermometer has not had a great range of temperature, 32deg being the lowest minimum, and 50deg the highest maximum readings respectively. The barometer has been particularly high during the second half of the month, with readings of over 30 inches from the 17th to the 27th. The following is the summary of the rainfall recorded for the month:—

During the month, for example, three, six. and four degrees of frost were registered on June 2, 3. and 21 respectively, whereas for the in 1025 frost was recorded on 23 oOTsslons. The rainfall for the month was 3.23 inches, compared with 2.03 Inches in 1025. and 5.39 inches in 1024. The heaviest downpour for some considerable time was experienced on June 12, when 1.20 inches fell within 24 hours.
