DAIRY PROFITS The Jersey is a special-purpose cow. She has been bred for milk and butter-fat alone for hundreds of years. On the dairy farm she is, of all dairy breeds, the smallest eater and the greatest producer of butter-fat. The most economical producer. A few years ago the New Zealand dairy herds were all of the dual-purpose type—neither one thing nor the other; butter was worth about 4d per lb, and beef was of greater value in a beast than dairy ability. Now, butter-fat is nominally worth Is 6d per lb, and but little interest is taken in beef. For a dairy farmer to be successful to-day he must breed a “specialpurpose” dairy animal, just as the beef breeder uses only bulls of beef-breeding strains. To increase the butter-fat production in the older dairying districts, purebred Jersey bulls have been used on the herds, and up have gone the butter-fat returns 50 per cent, to 100 per cent. Some of these Grade Jersey cows, under herd-testing conditions, have produced as high as 8001 b butter-fat, and herds average 3501 b to 4001 b fat. A great and profitable time is in store for all good Pedigree Jersey Breeders. The demand is an ever-increasing one. If you are a dairy farmer you must, in self-protection, milk Jerseys. Why not go in for a small herd of purebreds to assist in supplying the demand for bulls to head dairy herds? For full particulars of the breed send for booklet to the Secretary, N.Z.
