WAIKAIA.
HAIAAIA. May 29.—The weather has been very changeable, heavy showers of rain alternating with very bright, sunny days, which melted the snow from the mountains. The creeks and Waikaia River are fairly high. Sharp frosts are being experienced. Football.—The Athol and Gareton First Orarie Country Pirates motored to Waikaia last Saturday, and played against the local team, Waikaia winning by 11 points to nil. Ho •• key.—On Saturday, Mav 22, Dipt on Ladies' Hockey Club motored to Waikaia, and played a friendly game. The visitors were beaten by 13 to nil. .They were entertained to dinner and tea. A very showery afternoon did not prevent the formation of a large gathering of spectators. Harvest Festival.—Last Sunday the Presbyterian Church was decorated with flowers, fruit, and bunches of oats, it being harvest festival. Rev. Mr Smaith preached about the fruits of the earth, and suitable hymns were sung. On Wednesday the harvest rifts were sold, many useful goods, vegetables, etc., on the ladies' stall bringing good prices. Many bags of oats, potatoes, turnips, chaff,
mutton, etc., brought good prices. Afternoon tea was supplied in the Church Hall, the ladies providing very dainty refreshments. '
