OAMARU MARKETS. (Feom Oub Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, May 28. "Very little business has been reported in the grain and produce market during the past week. A few lines of wheat have been purchased at prices above the millers’ schedule, though the bulk of the season’s yield has already been marketed. Dreadnought ha 3 sold at 6s 9d and Tuscan at 7s per bushel. The oat market is practically dead though there is a tendency for this cereal to harden. “A” grade Gartons have been purchased at 3s 6£d per bushel on trucks. Undergrade Gartons have changed hands at 3s, but there has been little business in “B” grade. The nominal price of the latter is 3s 3d per bushel. Oaten sheaf chaff has been purchased in small quantities. The nominal price is £5 7s 6d. Potatoes have slumped right back and have been purchased at £4 10s per ton on trucks, which is equivalent to £5 5s f.0.b., s.i. A number of heavy consignments to the North Island have brought the market down with a run, and as Australia is doing no business the demand is weak. How long the present condition will continue is uncertain, but the outlook for growers at the moment is by no means bright. Farmers are holding in the hope that the glut may shortly disappear. Little has been doing in barley though there is still a quantity that has not been marketed. Grass seed is showing no movement and the market is lifeless. Fowl wheat has been purchased at prices above millers’ quotations. The movements in live stock have not been very considerable. Most of the fat stock has reached the freezing works and farmers have filled their requirements for stores at the wekly market. Fat wethers sold up to 32s 9d and fat ewos up to 27s 3d. A few aged store ewes were quitted at 11s 3d. Fat cows brought up to £7 10s. and forward heifers £3 10s. No fat bullocks were offered. The price for pig 9 has been easier, good weaners selling at from 16s to 20s 6d and medium weaners at 12s to 15s.

SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Odb Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, May 30. The Btock market continues firm for most classes offering. The heavy yardings of fat stock at Wallacetown sale tended to ease the market somewhat. Fat sheep showed a drop of about 2s to 2s 6d on the previous sale, while fat cattle, with the exception of prime bullocks, also showed a slight decline. The store sheep market is very quiet, with very little offering. Prices for all classes are Arm, with perhaps a falling-off in store lambs consequent on the fat season coming to an end. Fat Cattle.—Heavy prime bullocks, £l4 to £l7 ; prime medium-weight do, £l2 to £l3 15s; prime heavy heifers, £7 15s to £9 15s; medium do, £6 to £7 ss; prime cowb, £7 to £9 10s; medium do, £5 to £6 10s; runners, to £3; vealers, 30s to £2; prime ox beef in the vicinity of 40s per 1001 b; prime heifer do, 32s fid; cow do, to 255. Fat Sheep.—Extra heavy prime wethers, to 358; good prime do, 28s to 31s fid; lighter do, to 275; prime heavy ewes, 22s fid to 25s 9d; medium do, 13s to 20s; lighter down to 15s 6d ; freezing lambs are making 23s fid to 25s fid. Store Sheep.—Store wether lambs, 18s to 19s fid; ewe lambs, 23s fid to 235; mix-sex do, 20b to 22s fid; two-tooth ewes, good, 38s to 40s; two-tooth wethers, 25s fid to 27s fid; s.m. ewes, 30s to 335. Store Cattle.—Good forward three and four-year bullocks, £8 15s to £lO 10s; twoyear do, £6 to £7 10s; yearling do, £3 15e

to £4 10s; two-year heifers, to £3; old oows, £2 to £8 10s. GRAIN REPORT. Oats.—There Is no actual improvement In this market since last report. Orders for prompt delivery have eased somewhat, though there is still an inquiry for forward delivery June to September at recent rates. Local merchants, however, are showing no inclination to accept forward business. Apparently the general opinion Is that prospects are rather in favour of better rates later on. For prompt delivery current quotations are: A’s, 48 3d; B’s, 4s, f.0.b., s.i., while prices to farmers, depending on the distance from the port, range from about 3s for B’s to 3s 3d for A’s, on trucks, sacks extra. Dunß and blacks of good quality and weight would bring the growers probably 3d extra. Chaff.—This is offering by growers in excess of local demand, but the price Is nevertheless maintained at the old level of £4 10s, on trucks, country stations, for prime quality. Ryegrass.—This market is at the present time well nigh lifeless, and generally it is considered that there is little prospect of any business with outside centres for the next two months, at which time merchants will be considering their requirements for spring sowing. As a consequence merchants are showing little interest in lines offered to them by farmers. Undressed ryegrass has merely a nominal value of from 3s fid to 3s 9d per bushel for firm, well-treated seed from the mill, round about 241 b weight. FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD.
