INVERCARGILL, March 6. GRAIN Oats. —There is little in the way of business to report as far as this market is concerned. There have been a few inquiries for shipment for which quotations are 4s lOd A’s, 4s 7d B’s, f.0.b., s.i., Bluff. Merchants’ stocks are so low that- no reduction in rates will be considered. Offers for forward shipment have been made at Id less than these rates, but merchants without exception refuse to entertain such business, the lessons of the previous year showing such business to be altogether undesirable. As far as the new crop is concerned, the binders evidently will not be in general operation for quit.e another fortnight. The area is certainly less than last season, but on the other hand the crops are looking well, but the turnout depends altogether on the weather during the next four weeks.

Chaff!—Sufficient quantities are being offered to cope with the demand, which is purely local, and prices are maintained at the old level of £5 5s per ton at growers’ sidings. In an occasional instance for extra prime quality and for delivery at handy sidings, this price has been somewhat exceeded.

Ryegrass.—Last Saturday several lines ot early harvested seed were on offer and a few lines changed hands on the basis of 4s 6d per bushel for seed of 241 b to 251 b weight which had been well treated by the mill. Undoubtedly the early offerings will be of the best quality; anything coming in later will have suffered in quality and colour by weather conditions Despite this some of the lots offered already have been light in weight and badly discoloured As an indication of the variation in condition and quality as low as 3s 3d was the best offer that could be secured for one line of 2flLb seed, while no offers whatever could be obtained for an 18-191 b weight. Quite a considerable portion of the crop is stil» in stook, but with better weather conditions prevailing this should all be in stook by the end of the week. Threshing of ryegrass will not be general for another two or three weeks, as the seed must be permitted to mature in stack. STOCK REPORT. The stock market continues firm with prices much on a par with our last report. There was a slight improvement in prices for fat sheep at last Wallacetown sale owing no doubt to the smaller yarding. Fat cattle were bringing values corresponding much about the same as last sale. Tha demand for forward mix-sex lambs is good, and brings money which leaves little margin to the fattener. The inquiry for good store bullocks continues, and these are making prices which leave little in them to fatten at present. Fat Cattle.—Extra heavy bullocks to £l7, heavy prime bullocks £l4 to £l6, mediumweight bullocks £ll 10s to £l3 10s, heavy prime heifers £8 to £lO, medium heifers £6 to £7 15s, prime heavy cows £7 10s to £lO, medium cowe down to £5 10s, runners to £2 10s, vealers to 30s, prime ox beef 37s 6d to £2 per 1001 b, prime heifer beef 27« 6d to 30s, cow beef 22s 6d per 1001 b. Fat Sheep.—Extra prime heavy wethers to 345. heavy prime wethers 28s to 30s, mediumweight wethers 26s to 27s 6d, prime heavy ewes 15s 6d to 17s 6d, medium owes 13s 6d to 15s, prime heavy lambs 28s to 30s, medium weight lambs 23s 6d to 255. Store Sheep.—Mix-sex rape lambs 20s to 21s 6d, ewe lambs to 2€s, two-tooth ewes 33s to 355, two-tooth wethers 21s 6d to 23s 6d, two, four, six, and eight-tooth ewes to 30s. THE OAMARU MARKETS. (From Our Own Cor>reaponden r.) • OAMARU, March 6. The rain mentioned in last week's notes developed on Saturday night into a deluge, particularly along the coast. Over 2Jh* fell in town, for the three days, and some localities near the seaboard received nearly as much. This rain, It must be noted, followed a tolerably large registration for the three preceding days. Thus the ground became thoroughly saturated, and a good deal of water lay on the surface for some time. While the rain was highly welcomed for the growing rape and turnip crops and grass, it was quite the reverse from the harvest point of view. The accession of moisture has been the means of assuring a plentiful supply of feed for the autumn and winter, but that assurance was purchased at the cost of damage—in some cases serious damage—to grain crops. Though a fair amount of wheat and oats had been put into stack, and a good amount had already been threshed, the downpour caught a consider-

able area of cereals in stook, and in a number of instances the stooks became completely saturated. Had a good drying wind followed, the grain would have been saved from material damage, but there has been very little wind, and the consequence is that a good deal of sprouting has taken place in both wheat and oats, the latter being utterly ruined in some instances. Singularly, Cape barley exposed to the same conditions suffered no injury beyond some discolouration. Happily, the rain was much lighter over a considerable area, In some places being only about half an Inch, and no damage was done to crops in stook. In some of these localities it has been possible to resume threshing operations, but little has been done in that way, and it will be some days before the mills will again be active generally. Since last reporting only a few records of yields have come to hand. These, however, Include one of a remarkable character, Mr' R. D. Mitchell, of Reidston, having obtained a return of 136 bushels of Chevalier barley per acre from a small area. A yield of 104 bushels per acre of Cape barley is also reported. On the other hand, some yields that may be considered light for the season have been made known. The poorest of these is one of a fraction short of 30 bushels of wheat per acre—a return that is well up to the average of a normal harvest. The records all go to prove that the harvest in point of yields per acre will be of a very exceptional character, and it is a pity that some part of the excellent grain should have received injury because of growers pursuing the risky policy of threshing from the stook. The cessation of threshing for the time being has necessarily reduced the number of samples comiug on the market, but a fair amount of business has been done. This has not included transactions in wheat. Local millers have stood off the market, and are prepared to buy only on a limited scale, at the scale of prices adopted by the Millers’ Association owing to the uncertain position. Some sales of wheat are. however, reported at over the scale prices, the buyers being southern millers. A fair amount of business has, under the circumstances, been done In oats, though as yet few samples of Gartons have reached the market The greater proportion of the offerings are of feed Algerians, so classed because of being affected by the presence of Duns. They are the product of sowings for green feed, for which purpose purity of seed was not deemed essential, and they meet with little demand. On the other hand, there is a good inquiry foi seed Algerians, but these are not readily obtainable. The prices given have been as follows : —A grade Gartons, 3s lOd and 4s net at country stations, and 4s net delivered in Oamaru : B Gartons, 3s 6d net at country stations; feed Algerians, 3s net at country stations. There has been some movement in barley, Included in the transactions being a line of the Chevalier variety of good malting quality, which was taken at a country station at 5s net. The samples ot Cape barley offering vary a good deal, and prices have ranged from 3s up to 3s lOd, being classifiable as from 3s 8d to 3s lOd for good bright samples and from 3s for samples tinged with smut, up to 3s 6d for good feed. Some business is reported in farmers' dressed seeds at the following prices, all net at country stations; —Perennial ryegrass. 4s 4d; Italian ryegrass, 3s 9d; western wolths, 3s to 3s 2d; cocksfoot, 9d. Sales have been made of good bright oatensheaf at country stations at £5 5s and £5 7s 6d, subject to deduction for commission. Farmers have been encouraged to stock up with sheep by reason of having sold their fat lambs, and the good feed prospects, and more life has been infused into the market. There was a much larger yarding of store sheep at the weekly sale than for a long time past, but there was not an equal attendance of buyers, and a.*good part of the offering remained unsold. The prices realised have already appeared In the Times, and it is unnecessary to give them here. The main business has been done by private treaty, and in this way there has been a fairly good turnover, the sales including a line of 500 sound-mouthed halfbred ewes 30s 6d, and 500 halfbred mixed-sex lambs at 15s 6d. The demand is practically confined to breeding ewes and lambs for fattening on rape. The range of prices outside of those already mentioned have been as follows: —Fat ewes, from 14s for light to 21s for ordinary; sound-mouthed crossbred ewes, 345; sound-mouthed halfbred ewes, 32s 6d; sound-mouthed Corriedale ewes. 28s; cast station ewes, 27s 6d; failing-mouthed ewes, 8s 3d; mixed-sex rape lambs, from 20s to 22s 3d, according to condition ; good station mixed-sex lambs for forward delivery, 245; ewe lambs, 23s : cull lambs, 14s.

Cattle continue to move slowly, largely because there are few sellers. For the Binall number that have changed hands the prices have been as follows: —Fat bullocks, from £l4 to £l6; fat heifers, £6 12s 6d; fat cows, £6 to £7 ; mixed sexes, about two years old, £4 10s; mixed-sex yearlings, £1 10s to £2; calves, 15s; potter bulls, 1 10s to £2; potter cows, £1 to £1 10s; extra quality dairy cows at profit, £7 to £8; aged cows at profit, £2 £3; cows In milk, £1 to £2.
