stock. Mr Stead was unquestionably accepted as a really great judge of racing and breeding, but even though an admirer of Gipsy Grand and his stock he did not have any luck with them, although Grand Rapid won a New Zealand Cup for him. THE WEAK LINK. The strength of a chain is dependent on its weakest link, and just in the same manner the value of a handicap can be completely wrecked if one horse is let in with ridiculous leniency. No better illustration of the point can be supplied than by recalling how Amythas reduced the field in the Invercargill Cup to a couple of runners after place money, because he was fired in at 7.1 at Wingatui, and other handicappers blindly followed that estimate of his form. Amythas was fit and ready to take advantage of the opportunity, and won both the principal events at Wingatui, and then had an exercise canter at Invercargill. It i 3 heartbreaking to remember that ne subsequently lost the Wellington Cup with only 7.9, when he could have won with a stone more on his back. The owner of Kilfane was not so fortunate as the owner of Amythas. Kilfane was in the Oiautau Cup with about 101 b below his right handicap, but those who saw him run state that the Sunny Lake gelding did not look nearly ready to race. Kilfane’s last performance in the spring was an unplaced performance with 8.10 on his back, in the Winton Cup. He was handicapped to give Happy Days, who won, 61b. In the Southland Cup Kil fane has 7.6, and has been handicapped to meet Happy Days on 151 b better terms. Kilfane is the weak link in the chain representing the handicap for the Southland Cup, as he was in the (Jtautau Cup, but unluckily for his owner, the horse was not fit enough to take advantage of the oppor tunity. Fit and well, the Southland Cup would be next door to a “walk-over” for the Sunny Lake—Kilfane gelding. In just the same manner does the* weak link crop up with starting. The most ridiculous start that can be seen is that in which, say. a dozen horses stand flat foot at the barrier whilst something else guts away on the move. Another ridiculous start consists in keeping several perfectly mannered horses waiting flat foot at the barrier for several minutes whilst some fractious brutes are being coaxed with little success to come into line. Why owners tolerate such a state of affairs is really beyond comprehension Still, starters' are encouraged in that sort of thing. Quite recently it was stated in the report of a meeting that “although Mr So-and-So had several fractious horses to handle, he got them away on terms with the rest of the fields,” or words to that effect. Mark the word “them.” It really seems as if the starter was more anxious to study the fractious horses than he was these who were behaving themselves in a perfect manner. It is a very queer state of affairs which studies the welfare of the rogues and the riotous horses whilst those of exemplary behaviour are kept waiting for them. It is on a par with keeping an intercolonial steamer waiting for hours because a couple of drunken coal-heavers decline to go on board, or, in other words, to line up at the barrier and get to business. HANDICAPPING (?) According to J. O’Shea, the Sydney reinsman who drove Machine Brick in the Otahuliu Cup, they have a peculiar system of handicapping trotters in NewSouth Wales. O’Shea stated that if a horse handicapped on 2.20 ran second in 2.15 he would still be on 2.20 until he won a race. He says it is quite fair to all, and gives an ow-ner a chance to win. Mr O’Shea might have gone further aud said that handicapping a horse with a public performance of 2.15 on a 2.20 mark would be practically making him a present of a race. If his contention is pursued to a logical conclusion it would lead to a ridiculous state of affairs. Suppose a horse handicapped on 2.20 did run second in 2.15, and won in 2.19 J, would he be handicapped on 2.19£ or 2.15? If handicapped on 2.194 he could probably win three or four races before getting down to 2.15 again. The curse of light harness racing consists in the fact that owners will not chase a horse in a race with even less than ssec in hand. This is, however, what Mr O’Shea apparently expects them to do. Say the horse with a 2.15 mark for running second is on a 2.20 mark with another horse. Is it likely that the owner of the latter will try to beat him? The owner of the horse entitled to be on 2.20 knows that a horse on the same mark can go 2.15. If he chases him he has a good chance of getting on a bad mark himself without winning. Then, again, what sort of a market would there be about a horse handicapped at 2.20 although holding a 2.15 public performance? In all probability all the other owners with horses in the same race would want to be on him, or, in other words, there would be only one horse in the market, because the rest of the field would be spectators. No wonder that light-harness racing does not' make progress in New South Wales. Many people do not regard it as a particularly healthy sport, and one can imagine what sort of a game it is in a place where the system of handicapping positively invites owners to “ wait ” with a horse until a ridiculously well-handicapped horse wins and gets out of the way. Under Mr O’Shea’s system it seems as if owners in his part of the world will not “ play ” unless they can win in their turn. The idea could be reduced to au utter absurdity. Suppose that instead of a horse running second in 2.15 he actually went 2.10, he would, according to Mr O’Shea’s statement, be handicapped on 2.20. It would be interesting to know what the owners of the other 2.20 horses would be doing in a race. Would they give the 2.10 horse masquerading on a 2.20 mark a walk-over, or would they start against him and legitimately try to beat him? One cannot imagine a stronger incentive to fraudulent running than the handicapping system which Mr O’Shea claims

is preferable to that supposed to be in vogue in this country. We all know of the ridiculous bird, the ostrich, which hides by burying its head in the sand. The Sydney system of handicapping is just on a par with the behaviour of the silly ostrich, and the best illustration of the point can be made by asking the question, When is a 2.10 horse not a 2.10 horse? —and the answer is, When it is handicapped on a 2.20 mark in Sydney. A LIVE LINE. It seems to have escaped notice that Lurline, who won the Australian Cup of 1875, and Pilliewinkie, who won this year, belong to the same family. Mermaid, the dam of Lurline, was imported from England, and contributed her first foal to the New Zealand Stud Book when Waterwitch appeared in 1866. She afterwards produced Malice and Lurline, and the most notable subsequent foals were Gilda, Castaway, Le Loup, Naiad, Lure, La Mode, and Leopold. Mermaid only failed to breed in two seasons between 1866 and 1881, and she was then destroyed. It is rather interesting to glance back at her breeding, and note the source from which the line inherits it e: traordinary vitality. Mermaid was got by King Tom (sire of St. Simon’s dam) from Waterwitch, by The Flying Dutchman, who wiL be remembered by the historic match with Voltigeur. The Flying Dutchman was lost to England, but he established a dominant line in France, where his blood is breeding on to-day—principally through his son Dollar. The Flying Dutchman sired Flying Duchess, the dam of Galopin, and it is interesting to recall that two great rivals in Voltigeur and The Flying Dutchman were responsible for the great St. Simon line. Voltigeur was the grandsire of Galopin, and The Flying Dutchman became his maternal grandsire. Waterspray, the clam of Pilliewinkie, claims as her fifth dam Waterwitch, v/ho was a half-sister to Lurline. At the termination of her racing career Lurline produced at least one great colt in Darebin, who won the Victoria Derby and Sydney Cup, and was afterwards bought for America. One of Luriine’s descendants, in Lieutenant Bill, won the Caulfield Cup in 1902. In this country Mermaid bred on principally through Waterwitch, whose daughter Nautilus threw Galatea, Teredo, Cynisea, Pygmalion, Melusina, Nautilus Shell, Seashell, Bombshell, and Lakeshell. Several good winners in Sir George Clifford’s stable descended from Mermaid, notably Fleetfoot, Cannie Chiel, First Flight, Flying Start, and other notable winners from the same taproot include Ballymena, Limerick, Loyal Irish, Soldiers’ Chorus, Cherubini, Tannhauser, Rossini, Star Ranger, Rebekah, Obsono, Ravenna, Sea King, Broadsword, Ennengarde, Aborigine, Our King, Maori King, Grand Rapids, and others of lesser note. IK A NUTSHELL Galway has been showing signs of soreness. I tone displayed signs of soreness after working on Saturday. Acceptances for the Waimate and Oamaru meetings are due on the 9th inst. • The Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting takes place on Thursday of next week. Eaton Bells is in good racing shape, and travelling well in her work. Handicaps for the Great Easter and Great Autumn are due on March 16. Corn Money beat Los Ambus in a gallop over six furlongs on Saturday last. Nominations for the Tuapeka meeting are due on Wednesday, March 10. There is a possibility of a new training establishment being set up at Wingatui. Nominations for the Tuapeka and Beaumont meetings are due on March 10. Beauty Light is being schooled over hurdles and shapes well for a novice. The Timaru Trotting Club’s Autumn meeting takes place on Saturday next. If in anything like form Happy Warrior would keep them busy in the North Otago Cup. Overdrawn finished better than Circulation in a gallop over seven furlongs on Saturday. The reported sale of Mantua is lacking in fact, and she is still a member of F. Shaw’s team. Jack o’ Lantern is said to have improved in his manners when asked to line up to the barrier. Buoyant is showing improved form on the track, and is also a more robust-looking horse than formerly. C. Emerson had quite a field day at the Banks Peninsula meeting, where he steered four winners. The Southland Racing Club’s Autumn meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Pamplona was worked at Wingatui on Saturday morning, and got through steady pacing on the plough track. The Wyndham Trotting Club has received a very pleasing list of nominations for their annual race meeting. Kapuna seems to be on the improve, and shaped well in a gallop with Lava over seven furlongs on Saturday. Silver Lining has made a good recovery from his trouble in the feet, and is bowling along sound and freely in bis work. Reports from Australia state that R. O’Donnell contemplates starting a stable at either Flemington or Randwick. A couple of “resurrections’’ in Red Admiral and Mandrako figure amongst the hurdlers engaged at the Oamaru meeting. Happy Days is bowling dong freely in his work, and has completely thrown off the soreness he displayed lome little time back. Ayrovski seems to be a natural stayer, as he took charge of his pilot last week and bolted five und a-h: If rouuds at Riccarton. Kilfane would find a race a gift for him if he was in condition to take advantage of the weights he is being allotted in tne south. King Balboa will probably be found running a bettor horse at the Invercargill meeting than he did at the Otautau fixture. Walter Buddicombe, one of the oldtime riders at Forbury Park, is looking after Hurdy Gurdy in his work at Wingatui. Tho principal event on the Ashburton Trotting Club’s Autumn programme will be the Durban Handicap of 400sovs. for a 4.38 class.

Apple Digbtou has made a complete recovery from the trouble which sent him out of commission in the early part of the season.

Galante, the dam of Top Gallant, sold at 3000gns as a three-year-old, but before her best son came to light she was resold at 200gns. Mr I. G. Duncan is sending over several yearlings to Sydney. Mr T. H. Lowry is also sending over some youngsters for the yearling sales. The Dunedin owner Mr A. E. Blakely ha his colours successfully carried for the first time when Bon Skirl Avon at the Banks Peninsula meeting. The tip&ters are again advertising their wares in the Sydney papers. The boastful manner in which they assert their ability to pick winners is amusing. Galaxy and Gay Raiment arc again in R. C. Reed’s stable. The former is to be tried out OA f er fences, and shaped well in his first -school over them.

G. Young rode with consistently good form at the V.R.C. Autumn meeting, and should have plenty of demand in future for his services iu the saddle.

Eaton Bells did not show up at Wingatui, but she may “have better luck at the Invercargill meeting, as she generally acts well on the southern track.

Oamaru he has been sent up lib. Bonnie Winkie is to be given another trial, and Avill shortly be taken up as a hack in order to work away the superfluous beef he has accumulated. Top Gallant is said to have cost between JOOOgns and 6000gns in England. He did a season at the stud iu Australia before going back to training. Roseday has 61b taken off his back by the Southland handicapper after the Solferino gelding was defeated at Gore. At Judging by the form of the Soldiers’ Chorus stock got out of moderate mares, he would have been worthy of a belter chance than he received at the stud. Pink Note seems to have smartened up a bit as a result of his recent winning effort at the Gore meeting, where.' however. he beat a rather moderate lot.

Wingatui stables are well represented in the Great Easter Avith Overdrawn. Apple Dighton, Corn Money, Lava, Rob, Los Ambus, and Rosenor. Southland stables supply nominations in the -shape of Listening Post, Tommy Todd, Set Sail, and Baldowa. This end is also represented in .the Great Autumn by Listening Post, Tommy Dodd, OverdraAvn Roman Archer, Baldowa, and Mantua. The Mauritius horse Orion, racing under the name of Retreat, recently Avon the principal event run at the Tasmanian Trotting Club’s meeting. The race carried a stake of 250sovs, and Retreat (late Orion) Avon from 144 yards and established a Tasmanian record by Avinning in 4.53 2-5, or 4.41 2-5. He Avould have no difficulty in stepping a 4.40 gait on anything like fair going, as he Avon the Otahuliu Cup last season in 4.32 3-5.

Syracuse was the successful bidder this year for the Hambletonian Stake of 70,000 dollars (about £14,000). The stake is to be raced for in September at the New' York State Fair. This prize will be a fitting crown to a magnificent piogramme which includes such events as R&iny Day Stake, for tAvo-year-olds, 15,000 dollars (£3000); Empire State Stake, for aged trotters, 10,000 dollars (£2000); Chamber of Commerce event for pacers, 10,000 dollars. The total amount distributed at this gathering Avill exceed 100,000 dollars (£20,000). The acceptances received for the first day of the Southland Racing Club’s meet ing promise to provide fairly good fields, although in some cases they will not run to any great numerical strength. The Southland Cup has attracted eight acceptors, and the result will greatly depend on what sort of condition some of the field reach the post. For instance. Listening Post has not long been in commission after a spell, and he may not be forAvard enough to carry 9.11 OA r er a mile and a-quarter. The same remark applies to Kilfane, who is very leniently handicapped. Condition rather than the handicap may be the principal factor in deciding the result of the race.

Rarely is a non-trier caught in NeAV Zealand, and from the absence of inquiries into suspicious running a stranger would possibly get the idea that all was well Avitli the sport here as regards true racing. Such is far from being the case. Either the stipendiary stewards themselves are Aveak (says “The Watcher” in the Dominion) or the system under which they haA’e to prosecute their inquiries, and the difficulty of securing sup port from judicial committees makes them loth to act. There are any amount of cases which may, of course, be coA’ered by a perfectly good and reasonable explanation, but on Avhich AA'ould take a lot of convincing argument to change the opinions of those who follow racing closely The well-known performer Battle Knight was sold for a “tenner” after breaking a blood vessel when racing at Woodville it does not, howev’or, follow that Battle Knight has become absolutely useless for racing because he developed a weaknss that mav be only a temporary trouble. Some notable winners have broken blood vessels, and subsequently accomplished great performances on tne turf. The most notable breeder in racing history is Hermit, who bled before winning the Derby. In recent years Humorist, who was inbred to Hermit, also won the Derby, but n few day* after broke n blood vessel, and bled to death. Two notable winners in this country were Creusot anil Art. who both broke blood vessels when running at the Wellington Winter meeting, and only a couple of weoks or so later both of thtun won the Now Zealand Grand National Hurdles. Blazer was one of the speediest horses’ever seen in New Zealand He broke a blood vessel and fell when running in a race at Riccarlon. but the mishap did not stop him from subsequently winning several races. Several others of lesser note have been noticed continually breaking blood vessels, but also kept on winning rnces. Pilliwinkie’s success in the Australian Cup recalls the fact that in bygone years New Zealand owners invaded Victoria in preference to New South Wales, where they generally steer for nowadays. Lurline was the first Now Zealand-bred horse to win the Australian Cup (1875), and the double was completed by Calumny winning the Newmarket. Nelson just missed in 1887, when he failed by a narrovy margin to carry 9.7 and give 141 b to Trident. W. Browu. the rider of Nelson, lost his whip, or the New Zealander might hav’e scored instead of suffering a narrow

defeat. Lochiel won for Mr Stead in 1889, when Carbine ran second. Lochiel won the Newmarket of 1887, and there are not many horses who have landed both the Newmarket and Australian Cup. Lochiel, in fact, put up the remarkable performance of carrying 9.4 into second place behind Sedition in the Newmarket at the same meeting at which he won the Australian Cup. A New Zealand-bred horse in Havoc won the Australian Cup of 1895, and other New Zealanders who gained a place in the race at different times were Strathmore, Sternchaser, Culloden, and Hova, who were racing over 30 years ago. Signor ran third in 1909, but it was not until 1916 that another New Zealander, in Cherubini, scored another win in the race. Since Lochiel won the Newmarket of 1887, Ilora in 1894, and Soultline in 1909, Advance, Grenadier, and Broadsword are the only New Zealand horses which gained a place in the race. CANTERBURY DOINGS. By Ob?buver The Riccarton tracks have been fairly busy during the past week, the chief interest being provided by the horses with engagements at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting. In another week or so things will liven up, as trainers will be finishing off their charges for Easter engagements. Evidence of lite nearness of Easter was provided on Friday, when the Canterbury Jockey Club took nominations for the Groat Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps. The response by owners provides a hope for a highly successful meeting at Riccarton next month. There are 44 in the Great Easter, compared with 37jast year, and 24 in the Great Autumn, against 28 a year ago. It is not only in the matter of numbers that the lists are pleasing, the quality being particularly high. Thus we have Gold Light, Royal Div'orce, Grand Knight. Listening Post, Tommy Dodd among those who are nominated for both races, in addition to which Reremoana, Count Cavour, Glentruin, and Kilbronsyth figure in one event. North Island stables are strongly in evidence, with 19 horses in the Great Easter and seven in the Great Autumu, while Otago and Jouthland contribute ten and six respectively. A specially pleasing feature is that the North Island support includes several horses from Auckland province. Altogether the outlook for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting is particularly bright as a result of the liberal patronage of the leading handicaps by the owners of good horses.

Count Cavour and Glentruin are going along nicely in useful tasks, and they should be in the best of order the next time they have to race.

The fn r e-year-old mare Barn Owl, by Antagonist from Brown Owl, has finished her racing career, and she was sent to the Stony hurst Stud last week. Countermove, a tlnee-year-okl by The Ace from Counterscarp, has been sold by Sir Ceorge Clifford, aud he was railed last week to Dunedin, on his way to Miller’s Flat, where his new' owner resides. Paper Boy and Countersign, a couple of two-year-olds who have had a short lest since racing at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, are again in work with a view to engagements at Easter. Money Order is doing useful work, and he looks in nice order for engagements ahead. This brilliant three-year-old only requires to be at bis best to win good races.

The hurdler Kaikalm is on the easy list for a few weeks, anti J. B. Pearson will then get him ready for jumping events during the winter. Centrepiece is bowling along freely in his work, and he may be ready by Easter to run a good race. Murihaupo continues to do well, and he can be marked off as a horse who is likely to win a good race before long. His Majesty, a half-brother to the A.J.C. Derby winner Cupidon, is being schooled as a hurdler, and he shows promise of being useful at that branch of the racing game. Hiero was tried over the hurdles one day last week, but he gave an inglorious display. Blue Hall, Ethiopian, and Naughty Peter, a trio of jumpers who are being got ready for the winter, all schooled well last week.

A yearling by Paladin from Persian Lilac,-dam of Kukume, is being exercised regularly by T. 11. Gillet. He was purchased in November by Mr J. S. Barrett for 150gns, and be looks a likely sort. The secretary of the North Canterbury Racing Club has been advised by the president of the Racing Conference that the Minister of Internal Affairs has approved of the loan for this year only of the Cheviot Racing Club’s totab’sator permit to the North Canterbury Jlub for a meeting to be held on May 15. At a meeting of the committee of tlm Canterbury Jockey Club, -ield last week, the following programme was approved: South Canterbury Jockey Club, April 29 and May 1. Jockeys’ licenses were recommended to H. J. Smith and T. Jennings, the latter conditionally for three months, and remaining in permanent employment. L. G. King's jockey’s license was withdrawn. The following report of the Programme Committee was adopted:—“That the stakes and conditions for the future classic events (entries for which close in June) should remain the same as last year, with the exception of tlie Middle Park Plate, the conditions oi which hav'e been already altered and approved by the general committee—viz., ‘That the race be for two and three-year-olds only. The two-year-olds to carry 7st 91b and threc-year-okls 9st. Fillies allowed 31b. Maiden two-year-olds allowed 71b and three-year-olds 101 b. The penalties to remain the same.” Mr Edwin Fox, who died suddenly at Rakaia on Friduy night, was a very popular man in sporting circles. He was a committeeman and steward of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club for many years, while he was also interested in the galloping sport. He raced a few horses under both codes, Heraldry being the last to carry his colours. The Addington trainer T. G. Fox had a narrow escape from a serious accident last week. He was working his trotter Nelson Bov in harness, when the wheel of his sulky collapsed. This frightened

the horse, and he took off. Fox got his leg caught between the wheel and the shaft, and he was dragged for some distance. With the assistance of P. Riddle and W. J. Tomkinson he was eventually cleared from the sulky, and with the exception of a slight injury to one of his legs, he is none the worse for the mishap, kelson Boy, who is a very quiet horse, escaped with a few scratches.

The trotter Theda has been sold, and will in future be trained in Blenheim. She should pay her way, as she is a useful sort.

P. Riddle is working a two-year-old by Nelson Bingen. The youngster is well grown, but it will take some time to get him ready to race.

The St. Ursula filly in A. Fleming’s stable is fast learning the rudiments of her education. She shapes like being a good pacer. The American pacer, Morganza R, who joined P. Riddle’s stable some time ago, has been thrown out of commission in the meantime.

The trotter Carbinea is again in work. She is not sound, but her ow r ner-trainer has hopes fiat she will stand a preparation.

Nelson Ata continues to do good work at Addington. This young trotter has not raced up to expectations lately, but lie is improving in his manners, and he will be all right later on. Dolly Dillon looks exceptionally well, and she will be worth watching in her engagements this season.

B. Jarden has decided to pay a visit to America, and all his horses are to be sold after Easter. Nelson Derby is having a short rest after his successful trip to Auckland, while Realm is out of commission and not BKely to race in New Zealand again. , The American gelding Direct Tod is uoing his work in saddle, and is acquitting himself well.

A. Butterfield has made his reappearance in the sulky, having made a good recovery from the accident that happened to him at Forbury Park. He is working tne aged gelding Dillon Direct, who looks far trom his best.

Mr G. J. Barton has purchased the lou"-year-o.<\ free-legged pacer Mettle, by i n J FV ntc . f ™ m T A my Bells, and has placed lnm in W. J. Tomkinson’s charge, vr ' . lco Bol<l Fortune after the Marlborough meeting, and the Great Audubon mare will be trained at Kaikoura, where her new owner, Mr W fribson, resides.

The winner is an aged gelding hv Logan Pointer from Innisfail, one of faJni'J; F ‘ lrroll ! ' famous Rothschild —Ruahine

In a field of nine for the Tt-rawera Handicap. a t high-weight race of nine furlongs. Gay Life was favourite. Ayrovski began badly, but he soon raced to the front, with Gay Life leading the others. Ayrovski was beaten when the straight was reached.

and Bon Skirl came on to win by hall a length from Lady Clarenceux, who finished fast, and beat Gay Life by a head. Gay Queen came with a good run in the straight to get fourth, and she will be a lot better soon, as she is not ready yet. The winner is trained by R. Emerson for Mr A. Blakeley, a well-known Dunedin sportsman.

The Peninsula tv attracted a field of six, Carnot being a little better backed than Retrospect. The early pace was set by Sun Up with Carnot and Retrospect handy, and there was no change till they reached the turn where Carnot dropped out while Tarleton and Fresco closed up. Retrospect was beaten in the straight, and a fine finish saw Fresco beat Tarleton by half a length, with Sun Up a similar distance away, and Carnot fourth. The winner is a good sort when he is not bustled in the early part of a race. Tarleton will win soon, while Sun Up looks like staying further than a mile.

For the Ahuriri Hack Handicap Victory Bond was a strong favourite in a field of nine, with Oiflamb easily second choice. Oriflamb led Victory Bond and Serotina to the* straight, but Serotina then drew away to win easily, while Oriflamb just beat Victory Bond, with Gold Brick and Rapier close up. Serotina, who is a sister to Owlscombe, is a useful hack sprinter, but she has not realised early expectations. A field of six contested the Kinloch Welter Handicap, Zaragoza being a little better backed than Grey Lass. At the end of a furlong Grey Lass was in front with Brown Lady, Projector and Zaragoza next. Grey Lnss was never troubled, and won easily from Zaragoza, who was well clear of Projector. with Goosestep next. The winner is a half sister by Greyspear to Kenmore. Grey Lass will win in much better company. There were a dozen starters for -the Waiuora Park Trotting Handicap, Taho being easily favourite, with Frank Dillon and Ivor also well fancied. The public picked it well, as these three filled the places. Ivor made the early pace, followed by Riwaru, Tahoe, and Frank Dillon. Over the last part Ivor and Tahoe cleared out, Ivor winning by two lengths. Frank Dillon was 150 yards away with Okoura close up. It did not iook at all a good field for the concluding event, the Forsyth Flying Handicap, which attracted only three starters. The Harp was favourite, and his backers were never uneasy. Will Oakland led for two furlongs, when Murihaupo took charge, but The Harp drew out in the straight to beat Murihaupo by three lengths, while Will Oakland came on again and was only a head away. The Harp is very well at present, and he will do still better. WELLINGTON NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.! March 4. Rapine lias been engaged in handicap events at the Napier Park meeting. He is not to go to -Randwick, where he carried all before him two years ago, for the weight-far-age events. The Napier Park race will act as a pipe-opener for the Trentham Gold Cup at Wellington. With Runnymede in Australia, the stable should also get the St. Leger with Star Stranger. J. H. Jefferd’s team was withdrawn from their Woodville engagements, but they appeared at Dannevirke, and helped to swell tne “tote” turnover. Decoy Bird (Humbug—Love Girl) dead heated witn W. G. Stead’s Hypnotic' (Absurd — Salvett) in the Maiden Plate. The Woodville double winner PolyEbemus was favourite for the President’s faudicap, but another of the progeny of defunct Polydamon in Epistle won, and defeated Mimetic. Epistle (a halffcister to Correspondent and Communique) lias had a successful run since New Year at Stratford. She has since won at Foxton, Poverty Bay, and Woodville. It was thought that Indian Sage's turn had come in the Tahoaraite Welter, but the Trenthani-trained gelding failed. The Woodville winne., Imitation, failed to get closer than third to (Kilbroney—Black Ada), full sister to Clariuda and Wilmoreana.

Kilbronsyth was favourite for the Cup, but he failed to get iu the money. He may require a short let up. The vVood* ville-trained Opa (Hallowmas—Oka) won from Gauntlet, a stable mate of Rapine, and Sanctuary. Nastori, who showed up prominently at Woodville, was the choice of backers for the Oringi Hack Handicap, but she also failed. Royal Daraon (Polydamon— Royal Moment) won from Bouideer and Merry Imp. Royal Damon is a stable mate of Epistle, and showed good form at Wairoa and Poverty Bay. Mr A. B. Williams was again second in the Kakaitai Welter with Tuahine, who was beaten by the New Plymouth-trained Willow Wai, a stable mate of Te Monanui. Willow Wai won at Woodville, and has much improved in his staying powers. Archeen, w’ho w r as considered well in and was favourite, could only get third. Jefferd’s stable scored a win with My Hobby (Autumnus —Margarine) in the Makirikiri Welter, in which Othon, who has raced consistently since Boxing Day, was runner-up. Another of the Polydamon tribe in Perle de Leon (from Perle de Or) was successful in the High-weight Handicap. N. Trillo, rider of Opa in the Cup, was suspended for the rest of the meeting for interference. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB. Second Day—Monday, March 1. Manson, the rider of Green Bonnet, which dead-heated in the Maiden Plate, was suspended for one month for crossing in the straight. Lee, the rider of New Moon in the Mangaiti Handicap, was cautioned for interference with Santa Fe at the home turn. *ago. The W&n>;auui District Committee held an inquiry into the matter to day at the request of those concerned, the inquiry being held in committee. At the close of tfie meeting the following statement was handed to the press:— 44 At the request of Messrs Dwan Bros, on inquiry was held by the Wanganui District Committee at Wanganui to-day into the Tunning of the horse Alabama at Foxton on January 23. There were present Messrs T. Dwan, F. Higgott .(trainer of Alabama), R. J. Maekie (the rider of the horse), and Stipendiary Stewards M'Mahon and Wilson. After hearing the evidence and the explanation of F. Higgott (trainer) and Maekie i(ioekey) the committee accepted the explanation tendered. At the conclusion of Ibe meeting Mr T. Dwan expressed himself entirely satisfied with Higgott’s explanation. The committee is further of opinion that there is nothing to support the allegations against Messrs Dwan Bros, that their horse (Alabama) was not run to win the race in question at Foxton on Jaunary 23.”
