AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.

A COMMODIOUS BUILDING.

(Fjiom Oub Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND. February 28. The final arranements for the opening of the new Uniersity College building on Monday morning have been completed. It has been a particularly busy week for the college staff and the authorities, and the Urge number of new students who have made inquiries at the Registrar’s office indicates that the enrolment will be unusually heavy on the opening day. The college office was moved from the old Symonas street building on December 18, and the general shift began on January 18. This involved moving the whole of the college library, some 16,000 volumes, and also the professors’ private libraries and furniture. Hie work has been carried out entirely by the staff. There are 60 rooms in the college* and some of the leoturo rooms are capable of holding 150 students, while the lecture hall will nave accommodation for 500. The need of a hall was one of the many draw* backs to university life ’in the city, and, to* gether with the excellent clubhouse at the rear of the building, it should serve to fill an important niche in the college social life. On the three floors of the college there are 30 lecture rooms. Considering that the old building had only seven the provision foe lecturing is seen to be on a most exten* 9ive scale. No accommodation is reserved for agri> cultural education and no degree oourat in this study will be oonducted in the oityv owing to the fact that the question of the location of the agrioultural school is stiu under the consideretion of the Cabinet. Professor William Riddett, the newly* appointed professor of agriculture, has beta very busy gaining a knowledge of the country and farming conditions generally id thig and other provinces. There is a Urge scope for his work among the farmenr organisations and he has been given ft warm welcome.
