Of New Zealand’s 53,000 Maoris, nearly 38,000 are in the Auckland district but in only three counties of the North Island are there more Maoris than Europeans. Thera are three Maoris to every two pakehas in the Waiapu County, 120 Maoris to every 100 whitos in the Matakaoa County (East Cape, and adjoining the former county), while at Hokionga in lh e far north the Maori also predominates.
