SUBDIVISION OF LAND.
ESTATES REFUSED BY GOVERNMENT. GISBORNE, May 16. During the recent visit to Poverty Bay of the Minister of Lands (the Hon. A D. M‘Leod) a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce's Closer Settlement Committee submitted a proposal for the Gov emment to acquire certain properties on the coast for subdivision. It pointed out that young mqn with small capital could not take up large holdings. Several properties had been offered to the Minister by private owners at exceptionally low Jirices. At yesterday's meeting, however, t was announced that a letter had been received stating that the Government could not consider any of the offers. After discussion, in which it was pointed out that in some cases the properties 1 ad been offered at 33 1-3 per cent, below valuation in order that the land might be subdivided and settled, it was decided that the Government be asked to reconsider its decision
