It is interesting to recall the fact that tho lato Mr Massey placed the order for the building of the 14-footer Iron Duke with Messrs Bailey and Sons, Auckland, during the latter part of 1920. When the Otago challenger Heather and her crew passed through Wellington early in 1921 on the way to Auokland to contest the first scries of races for the Sandors Cup, Mr Massey informed the Otago men that he had placed the order for Iron Duke on behalf of Lord Jellicoe, and also smilingly remarked that the men from the old Scotch city had no possible chance of taking tho cup bock to Otago. However, Otago won the cup, and after the contest Lord Jellicoe remarked that Otago’s victory was due to the heavy-weight man who formed one of Heather’s crew. His Excellency also jokingly remarkod to Mr Massey that if he had had the Prime Minister in Iron Duke as the heavy-weight man, tho Sanders Cup would not have come to Otago on that occasion. Mr Massey took a keen interest in all the subsequent contests for the Sanders Cup.
