FIRES.
TWO SHOPS GUTTED. DANNEVIRKE, May 16. A fire at Ormondville early this morning destroyed shops occupied by Mr E. N. Borlase and Mr G. Donghie, both general storekeepers. The contents of the ahopi were also destroyed. The former building was owned by Mr C. R. Baines and the latter by the* occupant. Fortunately there was no wind, otherwise tho bulk of tho business portion of the town would probably have been destroyed. Mr Doriglue’s stock was insured for £IOOO, and the building and furniture for £9OO. BUILDING DESTROYED. GISBORNE, May 17. About 4 o’colck this morning fire practically destroyed a building in Makaraka, occupied by Mr R. Bell, a blacksmith, and Mf C. Jensen, a wool and skin buyer. The quantity of skins and hides in the store is not but it is not believed to have been considerable. The building was owned by (Mr J. C. Parker, formerly of Hawke’s Bay, now of Wellington.
