(Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, May 16. The week has been a fairly quiet one in the stock market. There was only a fair yarding of sheep at the weekly sale, the offering of fat animals was comparatively small, and this may explain the fact that, only a couple of export buyers were present, the result being that bidding was somewhat spiritless, and lambs fell from Jd to Id a pound. Ewes comprised the whole of the fat sheep, and these just about held their values. In store sheep good young ewes sold well, but other descriptions showed . a drop, which was particularly marked in the case of aged ewes. The range of prices was as follows: —Prime fat lambs, 38s to 35s 6d; medium lambs, 31s to 32s 6d; light lambs, 27s 6d to 30s; extra prime fat ewes, 88e to 42s 6d; prime ewes, 23s to 26s 6d; light ewes, 19a to 225; two-tooth * threequarterbred ewes, 42s 6d; sound-mouthed crossbred ewes, 34s 6d to 37s 6d; aged ewes, 19s to 24s 6d; inferior ewes, 14s 5d to 17s 9d; mixed-sex store lambs, 24s to 26s 6d; halfbred wether lambs, 235. Sales by private trqjity have been few. and chiefly relate to fat animals, for which prices have been fairl> well sustained. The details areHeavy fat wethers, 46s to 60s; ordinary wethers, 395; h«avy fat ewes, 27s and 28s; light ewes, 235; two-tooth store ewes, 44s 3d; full and failing-mouthed ewes, 235; grounddown ewes, 21s; fat and forward lambs. 28s. There has been a fair turnover of fat lambs on the per pound basis for export. Business in cattle has been very small, and has been almost confined to butchers' animals. At the weekly market the offering of these consisted mainly of cows, which presented plenty of variety in quality. Lightweight steers brought £0 17s 6d; prime cows. £lO 12s 6d; medium cows from £5 10s to £7 2a 6d; and light and inferior cows from £2 10s to £3 10s. By private treaty mediumweight bullocks have been sold at £ll and oows at £6. There has been only a trifling movement in store cattle. At the market sale a couple of pens of two and a-half year old steers were withdrawn at £6 ss, and the only sale by private treaty is a line of two and a-lialf year old steers at £5 12s 6d. The want of feed has put a pause to business in dairy cows. At the weekly sale a few cows just at calving brought from £5 15s to £6, but cows in milk and spring calvers had to be practically given away. Not a single private sale is reported. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Dun Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, May 15. The stock market for the post week has been much on a par with our previous report, and prices remain firm for all classes of stock. The market for fat cattle has boen somewhat over-supplied of lato owing, no doubt, to farmers being anxious to set quit before turniping, and consequently this tends to keep prices down. The first consignment of New Zealand apples this season arrived by the Rotorua, and it has been unloaded in time for partial disposal before the Easter holidays. There wera 6277 cases altogether. Of these one firm handles 3658 cases, another 1519, two others about 120 cases each, and two a smaller number still. All the fruit appears to have arrived in good condition, at least from what one can gather from the examination of a sample of each variety. Cox's are distinctly in good condition. Jonathans are hard and unbruised, though a little on the green side. Worcesters seem to have suffered a little, and show a little case-bruising. It is reported also that there have been slight traces of bitter pit, but hot enough to effect prices. During this week 300,000 cases of African soft fruits have arrived in London, so that the New Zealand fruit has a certain amount of competition. The Cox’s, however, will off at good prices. Some cases have already been sold at 40s, but it is anticipated that an average of 30s a case will be received. Ripston Pippins, Worcesters, Dunn's Favourites, and Jonathans have been sold at from 20s to 21s, London Pippins 16s to 18s, and Premiers and King Davids at from 18s to 20s.
