LOSS BY EMIGRATION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, July 31. The returns of population for the period ended June 30 issued this evening by the Statistician indicate that the total increase in the dominion for the June quarter was 1973 (including Maoris), comprising a net gain of 4143 by natural increase and a loss of 2170 by migration. Compared with the corresponding quarter of the preeding year, the net gain from natural increase in 1924 was slightly lower, due to a fallingoff in the number of births. The net loss from migration was considerably lower than was experienced in the June quarter of 1924./ „ During the June quarter of 1924 the ponulation (including Maoris) of the North Island increased by 3004 and that of the South Island suffered a decrease of 1301. The estimated population of New Zealand at June 30 was 660,248 males and 635,658 females —total, 1,295,906; Maoris, 28.470 males and 25,550 females—total, 54,020. The population of the North Island comprised 434,667 males and 410,006 females —total, 844,573; and that of the South Island 254,151 males and 251,102 females—total, 505,253.
