FOREIGN TIMBERS.
INVERCARGILL, July 29. The Southland Sawmill Workers Union has decided to protest vigorously against the importation of foreign timbers, and to bring the matter before the Prime Minister and the leader of the Labour Party. It is stated that the price oi Baltic spruce butter boxes imported from Sweden is now below the cost of the production of white pine bores, due to the lower w-ages. Unless something is done, it is contended that a large number of men will become unemployed. WELLINGTON, July 29. The Federated Sawmillers’ Association of the dominion has forwarded a protest against the suggestion that the export oi white pine should be prohibited.
