UNEMPLOYMENT QUESTION.
POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. Unemployment in Christchurch at present is not so acute as it was last winter, but it is a slack time as regards work in the country. To-morrow morning it is expected that about 20 unemployed returned soldiers will be found work on the City Council’s tree planting area in the Bunvood (North Brighton) district. Others will be found work cleaning bricks on the site of the new municipal concert hall. The Labour Department reports that the number of unemployed on its list is between 50 and 60, but this should not represent, all the men out of work in the city, as all who wanted work did not register with the department. Mr Benjamin, secretary of the Farmers’ Union Labour Exchange./ reports that he lias received many applications for work, but there is not- a great deal of work offering in the country districts at present.
