POPPY DAY, 1924.
Favoured by ideal weather, the sale of poppies conducted in Dunedin on Friday exceeded, if anything, the expectations of those responsible for the day. The advent of spring, the popularity of the object, and the knowledge that the money raised was to be expended in our own town for the benefit of the city amenities all combined to make the task of the lady collectors s comparatively pleasant one Reports are universal from the stallholders of an eagerness on the part of the public to contribute, a noticeable feature of sales being that a very large proportion of the purchasers were themselves ex-servicemen. Mr Laing reports a gross total of £492 lCs at closing hour yesterday, which amount should be further added to when all country returns are received. After the initial cost of the poppies has been provided for and local expenses—which are very small—have been deducted, a fairly substantial sum will be available for use during the balance of the year. Stallholders in the city and suburbs were as follow:—Forbury and Cargill’s Corner, Mrs Hook. Stock Exchange—Mesdames Todd, Dove, and Rendel. Jacobs’s Corner —Mesdames Tapley, Barningham, and MTntyre. Government Life Insurance, Mesdames Jackson and Foster. City Hotel—Y.W.C.A. and Plunket Society. H.B. Corner, Mrs Leech (Women’s Citizens’ Association). Sprosen’a Corner —Mesdames Hayward, Holland, and the Otago University Women’s Students’ Association. St. Andrew street, Mrs Longford (All Naints’ Guild). Knox Church —Mrs 11. L. Paterson and Trained Nurses’ Association.
