WEEKLY MARKET REPORTS. Burnside, Wednesday, July 30 Fat Cattle. —There was an average yarding of 240 head. The entry in this section included a number of prime heavy bullocks, with a fair proportion of medium sorts. Prices at the opening of the sale were hardly equal to last week’s rates, but as the sale progressed competition improved, the sale closing at an appreciation of 30s per head. Compared with last week, the average improvement could be stated at 15s to 20s per head. There were very few cows or heifers forward. Fat Sheep.—There was a fairly large vearing of 2600 sheep, consisting mainly of the proportion of ewes being small. The quality on the whole was good. Prices at the commencement were slightly below last week’s, but improved to par value as it progressed. Towards the end, however, the market depreciated, and passings were fairly frequent. The average decline could be stated at Is to Is 6d. ADDINGTON MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, July 30. The yardings were heavy to-day in both fat cattle and fat sheep classes. Cattle improved in value, meeting with a firm sale throughout. The mutton market was irregular, though it concluded firmly. The store sheep section had an unusually large entry for this time of the year. It included about 1000 ewes from the North Island. The market dragged for old ewes, which were forward in large numbers. Wethers were also easier, but ewe hoggets sold firmly. A draft of 355 North Island ewes made 40s. The first ewes and lambs of the year were forward, and sold at 14s lOd, all counted. They were a poor lot. OAMARU MARKETS. IF rom Our Own Correspondent.) OAALARU, August 2. The shortness of feed and the absence of a good rain have brought the stock market to a standstill. The position was well illustrated at the weekly market sale, when the total penning of sheep consisted of three old breeding ewes, and for these the best offer was 12s, which was refused. The Bales by private treaty have been few in member, as fallows:—Mixed four, six, and eight-tooth, ewes, in lamb, 38s; failingmouthed ewes, 24s and 255; ewe hoggets in a line of 300, 32s €d; fat -wethers, 40s and 41s. Cattle are in much the same position as sheep. At the weekly sale there was a miserable yarding. Tbe only representative of fat stock was a fat heifer, which sold at £8 12s 6d, while nobody wanted the couple of cows that represented the store cattle. The seven dairy cows offered were hard to cell, and good cows nearing profit were quitted at from £6 15s to £8; while aged end inferior sorts were knocked down at anything from 30s to £2 10s. According to tho annual report of the National Bank of New Zealand the net profit after paying a bonus to the staff of £17,700, providing for bad and .doubtful debts and including £145,567 brought forward from the previous year, amounts to £389,502. The interim dividend at the rate of 12 per cent, per annum, paid in January last, absorbed £75,000. The sum of £20,000 has been placed to premises account, leaving now available for distribution £294,502, which the directors propose to allocate as follows: In payment of a dividend •at the rate ot 12 per cent, per annum for the half-year ended Maich 31 last, £75,000; in payment of a bonus of 2 per cent.,- £25,000 —both free of income tax, £109,000; to reserve fund (which will then stand at £1,270,000), £10,000; to pension and gratuity funds, £28,944; and balance to be carried forward, £155,55S 0s sd. It is further reported that in May last 100,000 new shares were offered to shareholders at a premium of £2 per share in the proportion of one share for every five shares held. The new shares have been allotted and the premium amounting to £200,0.00 will be carried to reserve fund, therebv raising it to £1,470,000.
