RED CROSS SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society, held on the 28th, was attended by the Rev. Y. G. Bryan King (in the chair), Mrs George Roberts, Mies Williams, Miss Graham, Messrs E. A. Rosevear, C. B. Smith, and Chas. Speight. Miss Williams reported that in response to applications from ex-soldiers the following issues of clothing had been made; —Two parcels to Wakari Hospital, one parcel to pleasant Valley Sanatorium, and a parcel each to five outside men.—Resolved that Miss Williams’s action be confirmed. The Secretary reported that an ex-soldier, anxious to do a little work, had made inquiry in regard to a supply of cane. He had written conveying the necessary information .—Approved. Headquarters, Wellington, wrote advising that the next Red Cross Conference would be held in Dunedin during the period fixed for the International Exhibition.—Noted with pleasure A cheque for £162 10s was received from headquarters, Wellington, being a first payment out of the bequest from the estate of the late Alice Maud Smith.—Received with thanks. Headquarters wrote requesting copies of statements furnished to War Funds Office,

for record purposes.—lt was agreed to accede to the request. In regard to the Red Cross _ Nursing Scholarships a number of applications had been considered by the New Zealand executive at Wellington. It was finally resolved that the scholarships be conferred upon Miss Ann E. Kirkpatrick (Blenheim) and Miss Doris Christian (Canterbury). With reference to certain liabilities incurred by the Dunedin Centre, the matter of reimbursement from Wellington was discussed. Mr Rosevear undertook to go into the matter with the secretary.—Approved. The Matron at Montecillo reported that during the month two patients had been discharged and three admitted. Everything at the home was working smoothly and satisfactorily. Several very acceptable gifts for the men had been received from a number of citizens, whose interest and kindness was much appreciated. In regard to some minor alterations at the home, the Montecillo Committee reported that the work was going on. Mr Rosevear advised that work on the wall was finished and was satisfactory. The motor, garage had been put into order. Alterations to windows would be effected in about a week’s time. In regard to the wireless plant, Mr King that that the tests made had been very satisfactory. Perhaps some alteration to the aerials might be expedient. Mrs Roberts reported that the soldier patients in Dunedin and Wakari Hospitals had been visited as usual, and the various comforts dispensed to them were gladly received. On the motion of Mr Smith, seconded by Miss Williams, the sum of £IOO was voted out of the special fund to the Joint Peace Council for peace-time work. The Secretary furnished a statement in regard to vocational work during the pastyear. The men engaged in vocational work at Montecillo, Dunedin and Wakari Hospitals, have made good progress under the capable instruction of Miss Miller. The members of the committee were pleased to note that the result of the year’s operations, as shown by the report, was quite satisfactory. A satisfactory financial statement on general account was submitted. On the motion of Mr Speight the statement was adopted and accounts, as certified by the treasurers, were passed for payment.
