COOK ISLANDS FRUIT.
ARRIVAL OF SHIPMENT. WELLINGTON, July 26. The Ngakuta arrived this afternoon from the Cook Islands with a cargo of 16,000 cases of oranges, tomatoes, and bananas. The vessel struck bad weather, and was 40 hours late in arriving. From a cursory examination from the deck it appeared that a proportion of the fruit was in bad condition. The inspector’s report from the Islands stated that a proportion of the oranges had been shipped during rain, which would cause the fruit to sweat. An officer who is accustomed to dealing with fruit cargoes expressed the opinion that about 40 per cent, would be fit for the market. Much rain was experienced at the Islands, and the vessel ran into a gale on the run down to New Zealand which was detrimental to the shipment.
