OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD

The ordinary meeting of the Otago Harbour Board was held on the 21st, and was attended by Messrs D. Larnach (chairman), T. H. Russell, A. Cable, T. Anderson, H. C. Campbell, IT. E. Moller, J. A. Roberts, K. S. Ramsay, J. M’Donald, J. Loudon, J. H. Walker, and W. Wilkinson. Accounts amounting to £7631 11s 8.1 were passed for payment. The dock accounts (£363 19s 3d) were also passed for payment. It was decided to make a grant of 10 guineas to the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society and of 3 guineas to the Workers’ Educational Association of Otago and Southland. It was decided to forward a draft of the terms of lease of Lake Logan to the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, as drawn up by the board’s solicitors, to the City Council. A draft will also be forwarded to the Exhibition Company. Applications for the lease of land in Union street, opposite the Exhibition site, were received from the Exhibition Company. E. Anscombe, and the City Town Clerk. —It was decided to refer the applications to the City Council, the Exhibition Company, and the engineering department of the board, the decision to be submitted to the board for approval. It was decided to instruct the engineer to draw up plans and significations for building a wharf at the entrance to the dock at Port Chalmers. It was agreed to take no further action in regard to the purchase of the Broxton, the vessel which was to have been sunk and utilised to form a breast work at, the dock. It was decided that a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Loudon, M'Donald, and Cable should go into the question asked by the City Council and bring up a report to the board. F. Burke wrote asking for further con sideration of the question of compensation for injuries received by him at the Rattray street wharf, during the visit of H.M.S. Dunedin. The accident, it was stated, was brought about by the crush to get on the warship. i ved. Messrs H. A. Talbot and Tubbs (Sydney) wrote offering the suction dredge Archer for sale. —Received. The shipping returns for June were as follows : Arrivals. —Coastal, 30 vessels, 22,976 tons; intercolonial, 5 vessels, 11,529 tons; overseas, 15 vessels, 73,478 tons. Totals: 50 vessels, 107,983 tons. Departures. —Coastal, 28 vessels, 16,259 tons; intercolonial, 5 vessels, 12,357 tons; overseas. 12 vessels, 55,361 tons. Totals: 45 vessels, 83,974 tons. Pilotage.—lnwards, 15 vessels. 73,749 tons; outwards, 13 vessels, 60,793 tons; removals, 6 vessels. 32,313 tons. Totals, 34 vessels, 166.855 tons. Tugs.—Dunedin : Hours steaming, 22 hours 15 minutes; distance, 78 miles; coal consumed. 19 tons scwt; total coal, 51 tons. Plucky: Hours steamed, 70 hours 15 minutes; distance, 260 miles; coal used, 31 tons 15cwt. The Dunedin was docked June 16, and is undergoing annual overhaul, and should be in commission eariy next week.
