HORSE OWNERS AND BREEDERS.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Otago and Southland Horse Owners’ and Breed ers’ Association was held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms o.n Thursday evening. Mr R. Green presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting expressed its condolence aa to the death of Messrs Thos. O’Connell, Daniel O’Connell, and Robert Jopp, members of the association. The Secretary of the Racing Conference replied, in connection with the suggested remits sent forward to the Stipendiary Stewards’ Committee for its consideration at the last conference.—lt was decided to
thank the committee for its courtesy in considering these matters. The Chairman, in submitting the annual report, dealt at length on the subject of totalisator taxation and stated that owners and trainers could not expect to get any reductions from clubs while taxation was so high. He reported also in regard to the recent deputation to the Prime Minister in Wellington, and stated that the deputation represented all classes of sport from Auckland to the Bluff. The Prime Minister agreed that something must -bo done, and promised to bring the various matters referred to before Parliament at an early date. The Chairman congratulated the southern sheep owners on their success during the season, having annexed some of the largest handicaps in the dominion. The motion for the adoption of the report was seconded by Mr A. H. Fisher, who referred to the good work done by the association, and especially by the chairman, who had. the whole interest of sport at heart. The motion was carried. The balance sheet, showing a credit balance of £4 8s 4d, was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr A. B. Armour; president, Mr R. Fogg, and W. Quirk; treasurer, Mr G. S. Baker.
